Night Shift, as far as I knew, could only be manually set to turn on/off at specific times the user wanted. (I had mine set from 7am to 8:30pm for eg).

I preferred how Microsoft did it in Windows, where it'd switch on/off based on your location's Sunset/Sunrise times, as it was more accurate & minimised the occurrences when you wished it was on earlier (say, during the winter months). It covered seasonal alterations of daylight & triggered Night Shift accordingly.

So I delved in settings earlier, as the Sun set, with ~40 minutes still left until my pre-set Night Shift time kicked in, & discovered the Sunset to Sunrise option. Winner!

Has this setting been around long? I'm sure it wasn't there in IOS 11?

Are there any handy settings you feel aren't widely known (but most probably are) which you've come across that you use most/every day since discovering them?

The setting has been there for as long as night shift has been available, which was iOS 9.3 in about March 2016.

That works on the iPad too, but only when you switch to the numbers and symbols keyboard.

I've used Swiftkey since getting my first iPhone so I'm sure there are other keyboard shortcuts that I don't know about. Surprisingly the degree symbol works the same way in SwiftKey.

I use f.lux on my iPhone, all my Macs and my PC. It just gets your location and works automatically. I can turn if on or off by using FlipControlCenter and f.lux Flipswitch (the Nightshift button in CC is for f.lux).

WOW! I was never able to find that degree symbol holy cow!!!
Almost every key can be held to get an alternate. If you hold the vowels a, e, i, o and u down you'll see the accent marks. Hold down the period key and you can use an ellipsis. ™, ® and © along with ¢ are also in there. The last, just hold down the dollar symbol.

For the nightshift sunrise to sunset feature, you need to have Setting Time Zone enabled. Does the time zone setting enabled affect battery? Mine has always been off for this reason.

Nightshift sunrise to sunset feature also needs the GPS, so yes, it affects battery.

I didn’t know the XS had Reachability.. finding that was nice.

The long-press on keyboard area/space bar to use trackpad mode

Turn on Reduce Motion if you ever get instances of mild vertigo using phone (especially looking at phone while walking)

General - Keyboard - Text Replacement - I use this for emails, my kids’ names, etc.. any words or phrases I type a lot.

Enable iCloud or Messages - default it is turned off

Leave Photostream off if you backup pictures to iCloud.. don’t know why but it has jacked up my Photo Library before. I lost images.

Tap top of screen for full scroll to top

I disable (in Privacy) HomeKit, Location-Based Suggesgtions, Share my Location, Wi-Fi Calling and Significant Locations.. edit to taste to save battery.

With Touch ID, I would add both of my thumbs and forefingers.. touch with any to unlock.

That is all I can think of right now.

Tap top of screen for full scroll to top
Thanks for that one.

Only needing to press the home button once to unlock - Settings>General>Accessibility>Home Button>Rest Finger to Open.

There are many keyboard tricks/shortcuts like:
- Tap and drag Shift key over a letter to write it upper case.
- Tap and drag numbers ("123") key over a number/symbol to add it without switching to that mode
- Double tap space to add a endpoint and a space
- When writting email addresses, press and hold point key to add .com, .net, etc.
- 3D touch works over the whole keyboard, not just over space key, to get the "trackpad cursor" mode.

I think one of my favorites on the X series phones is being able to switch between apps by swiping left and right on the home bar instead of opening the app switcher..

Thanks! You just halved the taps I need to unlock my work phone with its custom alphanumeric pass code, and disabled touch ID.

found this on reddit yesterday re: 3D touch

iOS
TIL when using 3D Touch in cursor mode in text, put the cursor over a word, then without releasing your finger: hard press once, you select the word. Hard press twice and you select the sentence. 3 hard pressed will select the paragraph.
