Prior to iOS 17, I was able to use my hidden photo’s as my wallpaper. Now when I try, it states “failed to load asset”. I have tried holding the screen when I first turn it on like I can usually change wallpaper since iOS 16. I have also tried through the photo app, and via the wallpaper function in settings. Does anyone know if there is a workaround or if this is intentional? I do understand the utility of not being able to have a photo that someone wants to hide being used as their wallpaper. I imagine I am in the minority of people wanting to use hidden photos as a screen everyone can see…lol…but I do like having the option. I wish there was a setting in wallpaper that would allow or disallow using hidden photo’s.

Kind of defeats the point of it being hidden, doesn't it? I suspect either this is a bug (and you should report it as such to find out) or (more likely) that Apple made the decision that the perils of someone accidentally broadcasting hidden photos to their entire office or family via a screensaver or wallpaper poses a far more serious problem than annoying the 1/1000th of 1% of users who want to do what you are doing.

I fully agree with you. It is only beneficial for a very select few. For the majority of others, it could likely be very embarrassing…lol. I reported it via feedback. It would be nice if there was a toggle in wallpaper (initially set to ‘off’) that would allow hidden photo’s to be used If one wants. TBH, I was kind of surprised I could do it in the first place. 😳

I think you probably hit on the answer with your last statement: no one at Apple thought someone would do it so they left the toggle in. Alternatively, the lawyers saw it and went "😳, get that off of there!"

Are you trying to set as wallpaper with a photo that is already hidden? If so, what happens if you unhide the photo, then set it as the wallpaper, and then hide it again once set?

I have done unhid it and made it as my wallpaper, but haven't tried hiding it again after that.

*** Update - I got an email from Apple stating that the option should be available no in beta 5. So, it looks like it is something that they are going to allow on purpose. :)
