You can now hide past purchases in the "Purchased" tab, at least in 10.5.1 (not sure about prior versions). You can also restore hidden purchases by going to your account settings.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. It even works in App Store on OS X 10.7.1 already.

This is very useful. I don't wanna litter my purchase history with one-time free junk I try out.

Agreed. I just spent an hour hiding junk apps I tried but hated. You can also hide apps via the purchased tab on the iOS App Store on iPhone/iPad/iPod touch by sliding to the right like deleting an email.
