i used to do this by making a playlist folder, moving the genius playlist into that, then deleting the folder. now. every time i open iTunes...it's back (like a horror movie).

any idea how to get rid of it once & for all?

I noticed - and was annoyed by that - in the Public Betas. Didn't find a solution and disappointed it has persisted into the GM release.

Similarly I untick the iPad/iPhone apps options in my apps list, but find everytime I download a new app these options reenable themselves. This is an El Cap thing too, so it is more about recent iTunes
updates.

If you give me a tickbox and I untick it. That is my fricking preference. Don't override it.
