So i've noticed something odd ever since i installed 10.10, and through all the updates. instead of idling around 52-55 c before yosemite, my computer now idles around 65c. Now that in itself is not that problematic, i realize computers get old, OS's get more demanding. I have a macbook pro 2010, 2.4 ghz, 8 gb ram, ssd, and the usual. I realize its an old computer, but for my basic usage which is web browsing, word excel its fine.
The problem is after 10.10 i noticed that even seemingly simple apps, like microsoft autoupdate, or the mac app store, will take up 100-150% cpu. With say a torrent downloader, or actually using excel, i can imagine that kind of cpu usage, but i'm just not sure how a download from microsoft or the app store can end up with such high cpu usage.

so my question is, do you think maybe a reinstall would help? is this a change in the basic architecture of yosemite that makes it and the apps on it use far more cpu? or is my computer really getting that old that it cant handle simple things like safari or software updates without spiking to 150% cpu usage and 82c temps.

Definitely not OK, Yosemite didn't change anything that critical and the HW doesn't get slower over time by itself. If you're experiencing increased CPU load (along with increased temperatures) there's something wrong with your system. The laptop could get clogged with dust and the temperatures would increase, but that wouldn't change the CPU usage.

That's the reason why my 2010 mbp 2.66ghz i7 stays on snow leopard... better battery life, no sudden jet takeoff... :p

You may try to clean install yosemite or downgrade to mavericks...

In b4 yjchua95 says people who refuse to upgrade are bozos...

If you want to know if a reinstall will help, create a new partition on your internal hard drive and install 10.10.3 to the new partition, boot to the new partition and setup it up but don't install anything new. See if you experience the same high CPU usage you are currently experiencing. When you are done reboot back to your primary partition and delete the new partition. This will allow you to see if any third party applications or drivers could be causing the issues you are experiencing.

this is the first time i haven't upgraded a computer for so long. Mainly because i no longer do anything power intensive at all. And now i can see why people stay on old OS's. I remember SL used to fly on my system and used to stay so cool. If I reinstall something like 10.7 or 10.8 i can see how this computer might even last me another 2-3 years atleast.
