Hi everyone,

As most of you probably know there is a big issue on MacBook Pro 16-inch while using an external monitor.
The GPU power consumption is around 20 Watts while using an external monitor with lid open (in clamshell mode is much better in some cases, depends on the setup).

There is a big thread in this forum, but I think that we have to make another thread.
I don't want us to keep talking about the issue, but about what we're doing next in order to solve this issue, and I'm not talking about workarounds.

Apple support provides shallow and useless answers, the seniors ignore the problem and do not try to help us, and even an email to Tim Cook didn't help.

We have to think together about other ways to make Apple address the issue. We need to get their attention, and we have a lot of power around the internet that we need to think about how to utilize wisely.

We can't wait anymore. We can't trust them. If nothing revolutionary is done nothing will happen.

The first things that come to mind right now:
  1. Send feedback every day - https://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html. If we'll send a lot, it may achieve their attention.
  2. Make one of the big YouTubers aware of that issue, so they can make a video on it (MaxTech have done that, but he was not determined enough).
Now it's your turn, write your suggestions!

Let's be activists, come up with ideas, support each other and succeed in bringing about change.

You won't ever get a response. That's the kind of company Apple is. I'm amazed you guys did not see it until now.

The only thing that can potentially "move" them is a class action lawsuit, but you have to win. Even then, the most that will happen is they may give each of us, what, $100 each?

Personally, I'd use the computer in clamshell, or use my eGPU when I need more than 1 display. That's it. Problem solved.

I'm not going to waste time dealing with Apple, and I'd suggest that you guys don't either. But it's your choice.

Doesn’t using an external monitor automatically switch the MBP over to using the dGPU?
It happened to all of my previous 15” MBPs with a dGPU, which increases power consumption and will cause the fans to start up after awhile.

I have raised a case with Apple

The problem is that MBP 16" is using twice more power consumption than previous gen 15" or as compared to 5600M.

Old thread but I have found that NOT running in clamshell mode cooled my 2019 MacBook Pro 16 down significantly connected to 2 external displays. I had to choose to mirror my laptop with the main display and I dimmed the screen to black to save energy. All other 'fixes' have not yielded any results (clamshell mode, moving power connector to other side, adjusting resolution/refresh rate on displays, SMC reset, PRAM reset).
