Hi

When you set your game settings do you tend to go for
(1) high res and then adjust the details settings to be able to play at that resolution or do you (2) aim for higher detail settings by reducing the resolution?

Higher detail mostly as I want the game to look nice. Theres no point to a high resolution blob. Although I would sacrifice a bit of detail to get a slightly bigger resolution.

Going from 1440x900 to 1920x1200 is 78% more pixels even though it doesn’t seem that much more. So you get more visible benefit from higher detail, in my opinion.

Your second paragraph contradicts the first one. :)

I consider 2880x1800 to be high resolution. It's 5 million pixels (125% more) vs 2 million pixels (1920x1200). Maybe I should have been clearer.

Cool.

For me, it depends on the game. I usually play around with some combination of detail vs resolution, to find a good balance. For Borderlands 2 and the pre sequel, I found running at 1920x1080 with low effects gives me a more enjoyable experience, because there is a lot of text in the game on weapon cards, which is unreadable at resolutions lower than 1080p. I get between 35-60 fps.

With Tomb Raider, I bump up effects and knock the resolution down, because the way the game engine's done, it looks better to me that way. I get about 50fps, BTW.
