Running High Sierra on a 2017 4K iMac . Big Sur has not appeared in my Updates and when I tried from App Store, after clicking it showed “calculating “ for half an hour with only 1% showing .

After a while that disappeared and there was no sign of downloading progress ( nothing when hover over launchpad ) I clicked the DL button again which turned pale blue and the traffic lights greyed out along with the App Store menu along the top.

Again, after 20 min no signs of progress or DL.

Any ideas ? Or should I just leave it a few months for any wider issues to be resolved as have no real need to upgrade right now ?

Thanks in advance for any advice. My Mac know how is basic, as you may have guessed.

Yeah, Big Sur is a hot mess right now. I'd update to Catalina and then wait for Apple to sort out things

Big Sur is a dumpster fire right now so I'd wait. It seems to have been developed more by Apple's marketing department than by their software engineers.
how are the above posts helping the OP? & what about all the macusers running big sur who are happy with the OS? (or, lol, happy enough). funny, too, people suggesting catalina... that OS got more hate than any previous mac OS (but now it's 'ok' 🤔 )

i would try shutting off the mac with the power button. then boot into safe mode, and try downloading the OS again.

you could upgrade to Mac os Mojave, and Big Sur updating option will appear in 'System References -> Software Update'.

However, I suggest you don't upgrade to Big Sur, because Big Sur runs very slow and lagging on intel-based mac with fusion drive.
and there are lots of software don't run very well.

you could choose to upgrade to mac os catalina and wait.
