Anyone seen details of Photos in High Sierra?

They've added curves as well as an "edit in" function. It is supposed to save the edits back to the library but either I can't figure it out, it's not working yet and/or vendors need to do something. I haven't been able to verify but the option to save to tiff rather than jpeg seems to be at least partially there.

The adjust options are now: Light, Color, B&W, Retouch, Red-eye, White Balance, Levels, Curves, Definition, Noise Reduction, Sharpen and Vignette. Very much early days of course. Other functionality like Photo Projects Extensions, not quite sure what that is yet.

Very far by itself. It's even far from the old iPhoto in many ways. Much expected functionality such as local edits (dodging, burning, and other "brush-based" edits), layers, lens corrections and the like are handled outside in extensions via third-party tools. Apple's RAW engine has improved a lot in my opinion and the functions Photos does, it does well - certainly much better than when it was originally released. If you are in to machine learning and categorization, it does this well (in my case) and creating "moments" and putting together smart albums is done nicely (again, in my case). The filters are getting better and more numerous.

I do like the extension model. It lets me very easily use stellar functionality from other vendors such as MacPhun, Affinity, DxO and Pixelmator as a direct part of the flow without exiting. Kind of a best of breed for functionality. Now with High Sierra, you can also "edit in" if that's of interest (it is to me in certain situations).

It's easy to compare to Aperture, iPhoto and look at everything that isn't there in base Photos - and it is a tremendous amount. On the other hand, it's a complete rewrite from the ground up with a lot of great functionality once you add extensions. It's extremely fast. I like it. It's not very popular here in general ;).

When someone writes a Photos plugin that makes the full screen map with pins at photo locations like iPhoto did, I'll switch to Photos.

Well, I've purchased ON1 RAW recently but I do miss the Aperture as it was nice database + nice editing and it was kinda great for me. I'm still undecided what app to use for editing but for now I think I'll stick to ON1 RAW but I kinda wish they would make Photos plugin as I would have a nice database with editing all in one. That would be great.

Still not sure why apple killed aperture as they always focus on photos with every iphone iteration. Shame :(

ON1 functions as an extension to Photos already - you just launch directly into Develop or Effects, but can switch between the modules once inside the app.

On1 already works as an extension, and MacPhun, Affinity Photo, DxO, Pixelmator all have extensions as well. Coming up with High Sierra, you'll be able to "Edit In.." too. I do most of my metadata, renaming, backup and culling in Photo Mechanic and use Photos to handle cataloging and most of my edits (with extensions). Affinity Photo if I need to work some specific magic or have something particularly tricky, which isn't usually the case for the type of stuff I do.

Does it have two or four up or other compare modes?

Any changes in keywording?

I guess with AI we won't need silly metadata stuff though... :p Actually, in all seriousness it would be nice to have a completely AI, content searching more freeform image Finder as an alternative to the more structured ones. I enjoy using Google photos for that, and what Photos does on my phone in terms of grouping can sometimes be really fun, and surprisingly useful. But I don't wanna rely on just that; be nice to use Photos as say an alternative to more structured stuff.

And if they ever got that going with say AppleTV think how cool a gallery app could be where you could just have someone say Siri "show me our beach pictures" or "display photos from our Iceland trip" or whatever. You can kinda sorta do that, but with AI searching all that it could be a lot more flexible.

How do you use ON1 Raw in photos? I can't find it :(

P.s.: I think I've found it. Took me a while to dig up the manual from their website and find how the extensions work. Will test it at home. I hope its integrated well :)

Have they improved the organization/DAM at all? Referenced/Managed? Batch changes?
I am still using Aperture, because I have not found any app with an organization system I liked. I am hoping the Luminar DAM update may be a possible solution.

Photos.app has been able to do either referenced or managed from day one. But only a managed library, the system library, can sync with iCloud Photo Library, if that's what you mean.

Batch stuff is still kinda not happening, at least if you're used to what you can do in Aperture. From what I've read in reference to the new Photos in High Sierra that hasn't changed; Photos is making a lot of strides in editing, but pretty much nothing seems to be happening on the organizational side. Although it is getting "edit in...", which is nice.

Good luck with a MacPhun DAM; there's no product, let alone an update. It seems many developers trying to lure ex-Aperture users like to hint at such vaporware, but Macphun's been cycling through individual apps to a kit of plugins/standalones to an HDR app to now Luminar without even a hint at a DAM. Affinity is doing the same hype with no action. The only ones that you could count on for DAM functionality are the existing players like Lr, Capture One, After Shot, etc. Significantly the new player who DID come out with DAM functionality, editing and synching kinda gets overlooked: Mylio. Given that, I can see why they'd be reluctant to actually make such a product, esp since I doubt people would wanna pay much for it.

Thanks for detailed response! I spend a few weeks a while back testing every Aperture alternative I could find, and didn't find one I liked, so I am still using Aperture. I keep waiting to see if anyone will come out with something better, or if Photos will get improved to the point it will work. I am not a professional, so I don't need much on the editing side, but I have tens of thousands of photos to keep organized.

Luminar has said they would introduce a DAM in 2017, but I think that is becoming less and less likely. I will check out After Shot and Mylio, Capture One seems good but I wasn't a fan of the interface. I will probably play around with High Sierra Photos app when the public beta happens.

+1 Still on Aperture. I always ask first if Aperture still runs for every new macOS that arrives. I have my hopes for HighSierra. To be clear - if it wouldn't support Aperture or Aperture didn't run any more I stick with the OS I have.

How Apple could leave Photographers behind is still beyond me.

I'm sure their response would be that there are FAR FAR more photographers who use an iPhone and their needs are met by Photos. But it's weird, but at the same time they're going with the new iMac Pro, and still planning on a new modular Mac Pro. And they've got RAW from iPhone, but only if you use third party apps. So it just seems even more inexplicable they don't bring back Aperture. But I don't think they've ever resurrected a dumped application.

But sticking with Sierra is gonna be more significant than skipping some other OS upgrades, since we'll be getting a new file system, HEVC/HEIF, etc. Possible in the short run, but increasingly difficult as time goes on especially if you have to get new equipment.

I agree that there are probably far more people that are happy with Photos than the amount of people who need something like Aperture. However, I wonder how the cost of developing Aperture compares to its revenues? Also wonder the cost/revenue of its other discontinued "Pro" products like Xserve.

I do not need Apple's help in defining albums. I hope the later version permits turning off the display of the ones they shove at you automatically.
