Hi Everyone,

I am wondering if I'm the only one seeing these crazy high temperatures on my MBP 14 with M1 Max.
Using TG Pro (https://www.tunabellysoftware.com/tgpro/) and running Cinebench R23, most of the CPU dies reach 98C.
At idle, It's running at about 55C.
It's nowhere near what people have been reporting so I'm wondering if it's a bad reading of TG Pro.
Here is the measurement reported by a Youtuber:

Report your temps if you are willing to share.

Thanks

I'm having the same issue. Except I have the MacBook Pro 16" 1TB model with the M1 Pro chip. On idle, my system hovers around 40 C. When running Cinebench R23, it hits 91 C instantly. I checked TG Pro and the fans are not even spinning. However, if I manually set the fans to spin in TG Pro, they work fine and the temps drop. Can you check to see if your fans are not spinning when on idle and running Cinebench R23? This seems to be a software issue.

Mine definitely spin at a low rpm starting at around 60C and then it goes up to half the speed above 90C.
They probably ramp up to the max RPM after a sustained load hovering over 90C but I was not valiant enough to try.

Odd. I am not sure why mine are not spinning ever. And you are seeing the current fan RPMs in TG Pro, right? Also, are you on battery or plugged into wall outlet?

MBP 16" M1 Pro, 95degrees in Cinebench R23 (in the first minute after I started it). Fans were not spinning. Anyway I let it just 5 minutes then I stopped the benchmark.

In normal use, it has around 45-50 degrees.
Measured with TG Pro.

Im also worried about this, as almost everyone praise the M1/M1 pro/M1 max for being always cold compared to previous models. I hope I didn't get a defective unit.

My fans don't kick on when running Cinebench until the very end of a first run when it finally reaches 90C.

I tuned my fan curve using TG Pro and now don't ever see temps above 80C even when running at full load for 10+ minutes.

This is all on a base MBP14.

Okay, so you're in the same boat as me. Well, I don't think our units are defective because manually tuning the fans, or setting a custom curve in TG Pro works just fine. It is down to a software bug. Whether the fan curves are not setup right in the BIOS or on the OS, idk. For me, it is not really a big issue. I am a Software Developer and I can get around it. If I am doing anything at full load, I can tune the fans manually in TG Pro. However, I would expect the system to handle this automatically.

EDIT: Perhaps Apple will address this with a future update for MacOS.

I think apple is being conservative with the fans. They are trying to dissipate much heat thru the body first and when it's starting to reach the level where it would throttle or if it's a certain degrees for some amount of time. it might then start to ramp up the fans. Which from the reviews show that it doesn't take that much speed to get the cpu cooled.

Again this is just my take on how it works but idk. My machine hasn't come yet .. sadly . :(

I suspect that but some people's units are working differently, which is odd. Do you know what the temperature limit is for the M1 Pro and Max? Wasn't it around 100 for the old M1?

Now that I don't know since I've never used an apple silicon Macs. So idk when it starts to throttle

Oh ok. I own the M1 Mac mini also and the fan always hovers around 1700 RPMs, which is normal for it. The max temp I'd see for it would maybe be 70 but it never got warm. Mainly that is due to less cores and threads.

Yeah it's prob different since we have more cores and less efficiency cores

I’m running a base mbp 14 inch and it’s idling at nearly 70 and goes beyond 70 watching a 4K YouTube video. Very concerned I got a dud. Am I crazy?

Mine is a 16'' base configuration. Under light use (web surfing etc) it's around 25C to 30C (with or without usb-c external monitor), measured with a Flir thermo camera. Room temperature around 20C.

I'd look into that. My base model idles around 45. 70 seems pretty high for idling. There may also be a renegade process going on eating up the CPU making it hot. Check the activity monitor for good measure.

This sounds pretty high for the 8 core chip but maybe it's normal. 4k video is intensive on the system and the 14 inch does not exhaust air as well as the 16 inch, so it might be normal.

After doing some research, I noticed a few things. So, for the MacBook Pro 16 inch M1 Pro/Max, it seems like the fans only come on during the following situations:

If the temp of the system reaches 95 C.
Or, the system stays at a steady temperature above 60 C for a while.

When my system hit 95 C, the fans finally sped up according to TG Pro. Furthermore, when I ran GTA V through CrossOver, my system hit 60 C then eventually 79 C. After maybe 5-10 mins, the fans finally turned on to 1500 ish RPMs and the temps dropped to 71 C.

I also was downloading a large file for 2 hours yesterday and the CPU got warm to roughly 62 C. Eventually, the fans came on at again, 1500 RPMs.

Lastly, I charged my system starting at 1 % battery. After 20 minutes went by, the system got a bit warm. Highest temp reported by TG Pro was 47 C but the system felt warm due to the charging. So again, the fans came on automatically at 1500 RPMs. Therefore, it seems as if Apple did this by design.

NOTE: Your system may very. If you are on a 14" model, then it may function differently. Or, if you do not have either the 10 Core CPU and 16/24/32 Core GPU, then your system may perform different.

I hope this helps!

Im assuming the 14 is even worse ?

If anybody looks for more info. I have the 14” m1 pro and the idle temps are 45-50c so probably those are the regular temps for MacBooks in ambients between 20-25c

Hey uecker87, i'm struggling to find a safe and effective fan curve for my 14 minch MacBook pro with TGpro. It seems you have it figured out, any chance you could share a screenshot of the rules you have set? Thanks!

depending on the app and the resources its using, fans can kick at any temp. When I use Ableton Live 11.1, when the temps are around 60 degrees, the fans kick at 2500rpm or more.

its just based on my experience

Okay so I have two 16" base MBPs in the house.. Both set up the same way ( FF, Office, iStat Menus, Al dente, Unsplash Wallpapers, coconut battery, weather dock+, Nord VPN, Wipr, and Twitter.

One idles around 41-44, while the other between 37-39..

The only difference is one ( SG ) was purchased around end of Dec'21 ( the one that idles warmer ) while the other ( Silver ) in May'22

This could be due to the silicone lottery effect. Not all CPUs on wafers are made the same.

Has anyone had any luck with what's happening? I got my MBP 14 M1 Pro back at the end of April and was playing Sims 4 for hours on end with no issues. About a week or two ago I started experiencing a black screen (with the sound of the game still running including input sounds, so the screen turned off but the game kept going as usual). Did some reading and research and realized the temps are way too high. I'm hovering between 45-60 C doing light loads like web surfing, during my game I hover around 70-85 C, but I notice when the screen goes black the system hits 95 C with still no fans and I have to force shut down and let it cool down for 30 seconds, at which at start up its back to 45-50 C.

If the fans kick in, they kick in at about 85 C, and only at about 10-15%. If I manually kick them up to 25-30% that temp drops to a cool 60-65 C during the game. BUT I noticed the fans would go in and out after a few minutes, almost as if they lost power for a few seconds and then come back on.

Unfortunately I don't have any temp or fan data from before the update since these issues didn't exist, but hopefully someone figures this out, or else I threw money away since my 2015 MBP handled this game no issues.
