Not exactly like for like specs.....
Different amount of Ram, SSD size, GPU size.
iMac has zero upgradeability.
Can’t leave the iMac on 24/7 rendering.
If the iMac screen craps out, machine is useless.

Yeah, the Mac Pro isn’t great for single-core or “fast” tasks, it crushes massive bandwidth tasks or concurrent tasks though vs the iMac (running hundreds of audio feeds or editing 8K video for movie studios with 4 graphics cards), and supports PCI Express for plug in cards.

yes all in the Mac Pro’s favour and it was still whooped! Single or multicore arguments don’t really stack up in the real world use cases here

2020 iMac is a great machine but your characterization the Mac Pro got 'whooped' is bizarre, considering the Mac Pro beat the iMac in practically every test. Did you even watch the video? lol

The title is grossly misleading. The iMac is clearly the one getting its ass handed, not the other way around. Plus, you so comfortably leave out ECC memory, expandability options, cooler running temperatures/ silence during continuous workload, modularity etc.

It’s like you’re comparing a Fiat with a Ferrari. It drives, but like how the heck it drives.

but at 4 times the price does the Mac Pro give 4 times the performance? Thought not...

For most users the iMac configuration is probably the better option. If only they would sell one without the screen attached. :)

Zarf2007:
Upgradeability for many years is a major factor to a lot of professionals though.

I have 24 cores and two 5700XTs in my Mac Pro. I'll take the iMac on at CG rendering tasks any day of the week, thanks.

And I'm happy to leave the MP on for days on end. Your iMac will have melted by then.

That video isn't showing anything resembling an iMac "handing a Mac Pro it's ass". What the heck are you talking about? The iMac won in a couple areas, mostly based on its single core performance. If you configured the Mac Pro with the W5700X those couple export tasks would likely be faster on the Mac Pro as the W5700X is faster and less thermally limited in the Mac Pro than iMac.

I think you meant to say "for the price, the iMac provides impressive performance for the average user doing basic video editing and performs well for graphics design tasks. For more demanding usage cases, the Mac Pro will readily outperform, be more stable, is upgradeable and expandable, and remain whisper quiet" ;)

For the price of the iMac, it does provide great performance. The price of both reflects their components. I'll take an iMac/iMac Pro for my kids, but reserve the Mac Pro for the adults who know exactly why they need it and what to demand of it without grunting loudly.

I’d be bothered if my neighbours Mazda could sometimes beat and mostly tailgate my Aston Martin....

those grapes you’re all eating are a little sour now.

If I were bothered by a Japanese sleeper car beating my European car collection in a straight line, then there's something wrong with my ego.

Anything can beat a Rolls. So should we Mac Pro 2019 owners who can afford it all cry now? LOL.

Go enjoy your iMac Pro. You deserve it for what you can afford.

lol same moronic argument I used to hear from Honda Civic owners ... "Dude, I can blow you off the line!" I was always sure that meant something much more shall we say ... "happy" ... lol but the dudes genuinely thought an extra half second up on a Porsche or Audi from 0-60 somehow made the Honda Civic way better.

There's more to a car than gunning it off the line. Including say ... the entire car and experience driving it mixed with overall performance in all areas? lol gotta love the car comparisons to everything. I'm also 100% certain you don't own an Aston Martin, but I definitely do own an Audi RS5 ... oh, and a Mac Pro with a Vega II with dual XDR's :) try that on an iMac.

The iMac would freeze if you tried to FCPX 36 streams of 4K ProRes RAW, ~ 75 audio and visual effects, color adjustments/grading, hundreds of independent mic files, music tracks, etc. for an 81 minute film. I know because my staff have tried to load it on an iMac for fun. It doesn't even load library without collapsing. Don't cause a problem recommending iMac machine to a person who needs professional work-station for FCPX/Logic Pro. BTW ~ a second Afterburner Card does increase ability to work with more 4k, 6k, and 8k files. If you are youtuber making 6 minute show, then any Mac computer will do.

iMac would be a nice enough machine if it didn't sound like a leafblower under load. Try using an iMac for anything that stresses the CPU and you'll wish you could position it in another room. A shame, because apart from that they are really decent machines.

Unless iMac have cooling solution like iMac Pro, airplane takeoff sounds are extremely annoying. Had grading once time using high end iMac on mate studio (2019 tho), it was not fun, rear chassis is quite hot too when I tried to plug external drive.

Nah, not again. iMac nice for daily usage, but some specific task are still not iMac reach.
