Highest resolution an Apple laptop has had? (& any high res options on the horizon?)

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go back to a major commercial platform after five solid years of Linux and I'm absolutely opposed to going to Windows... so OSX is, by default, my only option. I've been used to the luxurious ultra high resolution displays on PC laptops, I currently have a 15.4" with a 1920x1200 screen and a 10.6" with a 1280x768 screen.

My holdout, apart from waiting for the second generation Intel Macs (just to give them time to work out the kinks) is my, perhaps unrealistic, desire of a higher resolution screen. I'm not really comfortable with the idea of a gigantic 17" laptop, so something in the 15" range is more likely... the current 15.4" MacBook Pros are 1440x900, the old 15.2" PowerBooks are 1440x960 and, of course, the 12.1" laptops are all 1024x768.

Is there any reputable information for higher resolution screens in the near future? Has Apple used any higher resolution screens in the past? Does anyone have any idea what the resolution of the rumored 13.3" Apple laptop would be?

Apple are unlikely to ship anything about around 100dpi, 120dpi max until 10.5 ships with resolution independent display technology turned on. This is not going to happen for over a year at least.

I feel the same way. My 15.4" laptop has a 1920x1200 res and I absolutely love the screen real estate. I don't care if its not the same optical size as the big screen I might plug it into because how often do people really do that?
If you have say a 30" or a 23" display then the comparative low res of a 15.4" laptop will feel way too small. When you're used to using a high res desktop doing the same work on a laptop with a way smaller screen isn't that great.
