Highlight single lines in Quark

Iam looking to know how to highlight single sentences, words or paragraphs in Quark8, with a background colour and colour text, you see it sometimes in magazines, pull quotes were you want an emphasis on something, I think I know indesign does it but not sure about quark

No easy way, I'm afraid. It's either colour up your text boxes or place anchored coloured and baseline shifted text boxes into your main text boxes.

I don't have Quark installed on the laptop I'm using to type this, but back in the day, we used paragraph rules simulate this effect. You can't apply it to single words, but you can use it on anything that ends in a return. If you break the individual lines in a para up with returns, but keep the leading tight-ish, you'll be able to apply this to quite long paragraphs.

In the paragraph style sheet, use Rule Below and set a high point value (say 12pt for starters) and then use the Offset option to pull the rule up so that it sits behind the text. Trial and error should quickly show you how to get an effect that looks pretty much exactly what you're after.

It's been a long time since I had to use Quark for any serious typesetting, so there may be a much easier way to achieve what you're looking to do -- I think this technique dates back to QX 3.32!

Can't replicate it in Quark 7, Jim. The rule sits in front of the copy.

I used to teach an advance QuarkXPress class but now use InDesign. Digging through the course materials I found the following note about using rules in QuarkXPress. I haven't tried it on the latest version.

Rule Above and Below attributes
A couple of basic things to keep in mind when using paragraph rules are:

• Absolute or relative values can be expressed in the Offset value field. Relative values are represented as percentages of the space between two paragraphs. Absolute values are expressed in any unit of measure. Absolute values require a bit more figuring but produce the most consistent results.
  Remember to remove the default percentage mark.
• The Offset value is always measured from the baseline. In Rule Below, Offset describes the distance from the baseline to the top of the rule.
  In Rule Above, Offset describes the distance from the baseline to the bottom of the rule.
• In order to use paragraph Rules as reverse bars, you must use the Rule Above, make a fat rule, and use a negative number (26% of the rule width) in the Offset category. (Example: 14 point rule with 0p3.7 Offset) Set First Line Indent to a few points in the Format window. (Tip: Value fields accept mathmatic equasions so you can type 0p14*0.26 to get 26% of rule width/height.)
