I rented my first HD movie on my 1080p Apple TV.

It was "Drive"

The movie was shot and released on 2.35:1 widescreen yet the rental was only 1.78:1 widescreen

Do Apple crop all their movies or did they make a mistake?

Anyone else hired it?

resolution of the HD version i have is 1280x544 (which is 2.35:1).
if you rented direct on the appletv, how do you know that it is actually 1.78:1 ?

Because I have a 1.78:1 screen and it filled it instead of putting in the black bars at the top and bottom like a 2.35:1 movie

and you don't have any zoom options enabled on the TV?

No way. Just through native.

Do you own DRIVE on iTunes or you just rented it?

Maybe the rental is the wrong ratio and the purchase is the correct one

Either way... I've complained to Apple

Do this as a test.
Go to "Drive" in the store on the AppleTV, and choose the "Preview" option. Is it 2.35:1 or 1.78:1?

It's 2.35:1 for me when viewing the preview.

I was going to rent it on Saturday but on the UK iTunes store, Drive HD version is not 1080p anyway (yet). I rented something else instead which was. In my experience movie rentals are nearly always 2.35:1.

The trailer is 2.35:1. Thats the annoying part.

I don't get why they butchered the movie!!

I rented it from the US iTunes store in 1080p

Actually I'm wrong!

The trailer is 1.78:1 too!!

But if I change my store to the UK store... its 2.35:1 (different trailer!)

Try it yourself! Change the store to US and you can see what I mean...

For some reason they stuffed the US version! :|

I hope its just a one off with iTunes rentals...

OK... after comparing the UK preview to the US movie I can now say the US one is actually showing MORE of the image!

Check out my screenshots:

Interesting hey!
