What would you say is an average cost for a simple app that pulls data from a database?

I'm looking to hire someone to create this app for me, but I have no idea on where to go. Any suggestions?

You have nowhere near enough information to make an estimate here.

Where is this database located? If it's on a server then who will be writing the server interface? If the database is on the phone itself how will the intitial data get there? What kind/how much data? What kind of interface is needed for entering, searching and displaying this data?

Anywhere from nothing, to letting the developer monetize the result themselves, to 100+ hours at $100+/Hr, to much much more (iFund VC level salary plus stock options). The average of that wide a range won't mean much.

You'll have to convince most competent iPhone developers that your idea and remuneration rate per day will very likely be much better than their (possibly inflated) expected rate of return for developing their own app ideas and putting them into the App store by themselves.

Can you do that?

Ya, I realize there's a lot more to explaining and getting quoted on an app then a few lines on a forum. But do you guys have any recommendations on where to find these coders/developers?

Well I'm not sure how soon you need it. And I'm still in the basic learning of the language of Xcode. This doesn't mean that I don't know programming languages. Plus what they guy said $100+ an hour that's not really true. It'd all depend on how fast you wanted it. If you want to contact me and tell me specifics I'll look into it. I'm a freshman in college and know the languages C++, Java and HTML but I'm teaching myself Xcode. If what your specifics are and how soon you need it depends upon how much I'd charge. If you want to contact me, email @ pmcavoy89@yahoo.com.

Good, experienced developers make that or more regularly, depending on the industry you do the work for. I know developers (half a dozen or so) only 3-5 years out of school, no prior work experience, making $70/hour or more on regular 40 hour a week job, because they're good at what they do. Good developers get paid good money. If you put schedule crunches in there or ridiculous hours, that rate can easily go over $100/hour.

Just remember: Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. Programming is an art which combines the intelligence gained from education with the wisdom gained from experience. One star programmer can be worth more than any number of novices, so choose wisely; Going cheap or trying to throw bodies at a problem will cause you pain in the long run.

Where do you find programmers? For a new small project it may well make sense to have the programmer geographically near where ever you are; otherwise make sure they are proficient with remote development as communication will be key. That being said, try to find local user groups - they might allow job postings or have special lists set up for that. Something like this for example.

Elance

I am having an iphone app developed through this great website elance.com. You post the job and companies/individuals bid on it. It's a sealed bid so no one sees it but you. Most of the companies that bid on mine were in India/Pakistan which was scary at first but seeing their work, the positive feedback they got and the lower cost made it a good choice.:D
