Hitachi 200 GB 7200 Travelstar.. Good Drive?

I just ordered the fairly new 200 gig 7200 HD for my MBP. I use the older 120 5400 rpm that came with my somewhat older MBP. Anyone using this drive? If so how do you like it?

I saw that Seagate has the Momentus which looked pretty impressive but I do believe the power consumption is more on this drives. Specs otherwise seemed very similar.
 
I don't know details about power consumption.. but I'm using this drive in my new MBP and I love it. It's much more quiet and doesn't feel as hot to touch compared to my previous (Seagate 160GB 7200rpm).
 
I actually just installed this drive yesterday. Something was wrong with my stock drive (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/385804/).

I haven't really been on my MBP much since then. But I think it's cooler (temp) than the stock fujitsu drive (i'll have to run it some more to be for sure). It's definitely faster and not giving me the problems the stock drive was giving me.

Oh...I bought this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8355709&st=hitachi+external+drive&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1177112455216 yesterday from best buy. I earlier found on this site that it actually contains the travelstar 200GB 7200rpm drive, if the S/N starts with DTG. This deal works out much better than buying the travelstar separately.

That external said it was 5400 though... Was this not the case? Or did you put in the 5400 on purpose?

The best deal I found was 154.00 at tigerdirect
 
I'm hoping it's as sweet as reviews are making it out to be. I ordered mine yesterday too as an upgrade to my MacBook's 60GB 5400rpm stock drive. Should be quite a difference all around, heh.

I haven't made up my mind on an external enclosure for the drive taken out of the MacBook though. I've only found a couple of 2.5" SATA enclosures with FW connector, and they have been $80. I'll probably just settle for some USB one... meh.
 
I've had mine in since the end of August and love it. I usually run my MBP on the "Better performance" battery setting, and it the area right above the hard drive can get warm, but not hot. Its dead-silent, and runs great.


Its a great choice..probably the best $200 I've spent in a long time :p
 
I also bought this drive. First put it into an external case, then moved it into a 17" MacBook Pro. The drive was a bit noisy and I could feel the vibration through the external case. However, once I moved it into the MBP, it was as quiet as the stock drive (160gb 5400rpm, also a Hitachi), and I could barely feel the vibration. Performance improvement is definitely noticeable. It doesn't seem to generate any more heat than the stock drive, either.

Putting this in a USB enclosure would be a waste of this drive... you'll cut throughput in half. With FW800, this drive can easily do 60 MBytes/s.

You're right though, the FW800 enclosures start at about $80.

I'm not putting the new 7200 rpm drive in there, just the 5400 rpm drive taken out of my MacBook, but yeah, your point is the same...I always stick with a FireWire when I can, but I don't think I want to shell out that kinda dough for this.
 
I put one in my MBP a month ago. I think they've dropped 25% in price since then, LOL. Hard drive prices have dropped way faster than I thought... which is GREAT.

The drive is fast and quiet.
 
I put it in my MBP and I notice it to be faster than the seagate 160 GB 7200 I had in it before. Highly recommend this drive. 16MB cache is nice too.:D
 
Well guys I am happy to report that I installed my new Hitachi 200gb 7200 as my system drive with a fresh install of Leopard and I am very happy with the results. If you are not running a 7200 as your system disk then I suggest you change this. The swap was a little intense but not that bad. To many damn tiny little screws! But I got em' all back into place and she is running like a champ that seems a good 15% - 25% faster from the older 120gb 54000 in overall system performance. Very happy with the results. :D
