Hitachi 2tb, Ticking, Massive Vibration

Hi, just bought a Mac Pro 1,1 with an Apple branded Hitachi 2tb drive on board. The drive is labeled as December 2011. Basically it makes like a ticking or ping sound 2-3 seconds like clockwork then after a while makes a few clicks then goes back to the ticking/ping routine.

It also sounds like a plane taking off. I put it in my HP Microserver (mounted on its side on the proper plastic caddy that comes with the microservers) to see if it reacted differently and after closing the door it could be heard through 2 rooms with very thick walls due to the vibration.

Disk Utility reports everything is fine, smart is verified, the drive checks out fine. When the drive spins down the ticking stops as expected. Is this normal for these Hitachi drives and does anyone know if I'd be able to get a replacement as its really disturbing. As the Mac Pro is from earlier 2008 and the HDD is 2011 it can't be from that computer. Cheers.
 
Cheers guys I was thinking that myself, thanks for re-affirming I'm not going mad. After years playing with tech and well over 500 HDD's the guy selling me the Mac Pro tells me its fine. Its not.

I called Apple and they said its Hitachis issue as I can't identify the Apple machine it came from. So basically Apple are quite prepared to charge inflated prices when a drive is purchased (when they get them at bulk discount), whether through an original purchase or afterwards, put their sticker on it, then wash their hands of it. I just checked with Hitachis website and its not an eligible HDD (not that its out of warranty), likely as it came from Apple.

Does anyone know if these drives are known for being noisy and vibrating etc. Its marked HDS723020BLA642

With the amount of Apple machines I've now gotten with failing components and design defects and having had them try to deny consumer law including major security issues with my accounts I'm getting sick of them. Wouldn't mind if they paid more than 2% tax but they don't. (sorry rant needed)
 
go to youtube and listen for failed hard drive sounds. you will most likely hear a sound just like your hitachi's im sure of it.
 
Yep, sounds not too good. Backup all data, get a replacement (I swear by Western Digital). Remember to sanitize the data with Disk Utility (zero-out with secure erase) prior to sending it back.

So if I understand correctly ... you bought a used MP 1,1 from someone and the HDD drive sounds like it's failing.

The machine was made around 2007 if memory serves me correctly and contains a HDD made in 2011. So, obviously, the HDD didn't come with the system shipped by Apple. And you are upset that Apple won't replace it six years after the original ship date?

Clicking can be a normal sound on some models, or a sign of impending doom on others. But I'm not aware of ANY modern consumer drive being noisy and vibrating to extreme levels that you describe.

Pop in a new drive.
 
HDDs are now a commodity and relatively inexpensive. Either WD Black or Seagate Barracuda. Both are quality drives. The Western Digital is noisy however, it clicks while it's seeking. Not a loud click, but audible nonetheless. Not disturbing to me, but maybe to you. The Barracuda is dead silent.

Also, how could you really expect Apple to warranty a drive from an unknown machine that someone put in a 7 year old Mac Pro? Whether it's labeled Macintosh or not, it is in no way an Apple issue. I do see, however, that you do have some redress with the seller.
