Hitachi VS Western Digital VS Seagate

For the new imacs, i personally have a seagate. Which would you prefer out of the 3 Apple puts in their iMacs? I find it hard to believe, but if specs are correct, the seagate is the best, so its like giving some people better imacs without choice!!

To be simple, if you could upgrade your HD, which brand would you pick?

but in the poll say which kind YOU have, you can tell in the system profiler, for Hitachi people, it says hitachi, for western digital the model number starts with "WD", so seagate, your model number will start with "ST"

I prefer Seagate, but honestly it's mostly because of their 5-Year warranty. That won't apply to the OEM drives like those Apple gets though. Generally, hard drives are pretty much the same these days - there are some trade offs but nothing worth getting in a snit over...

I wouldn't buy Hitachi. Hitachi bought IBM's hard disk business. IBM were the manufacturers of the infamous Deathstars. Although it seems that Hitachi's current products are of much higher quality than when IBM owned the business, it would take some major convincing for me to go and buy one.

I normally buy Western Digital because I've been using WD for many years now, and I've yet to have a failure.

That depends entirely on the drive model. Some Seagates are
faster than some WDs -- and sometimes it's the other way
around. Same with Hitachi. All big HD manufacturers make a
variety of products with different price/performance tradeoffs.

No tellin' what you'll get from Apple; they generally seem
to use fast drives -- but seldom the fastest available.

BTW, I've had two OEM drives that came installed in PCs
replaced under warranty by Seagate -- just called Seagate
tech support and gave them the serial number. They sent
out a new drive with a prepaid return shipping label for
the old one. Tried it once with WD and they just laughed.

BTW2 you forgot Samsung. They're currently the speed
champion in 1TB drives (or at least they were last week).

I couldn't care less.

Mine has a Western Digital WDC WD3200AAJS-40RYA0.
No problems whatsoever, it performs fast and silent.

(I am thinking of buying an external hard drive, probably an Iomega)

well, my two old PC's had maxtor's, those things were engines!!!! im glad seagate finished them, so i guess, i basically have been following the same track of hard drives.

my friends imac has a wd, he has the same amount of ram, processor, everything, but his safari opens like a 2ghz instead of 2.8, mine opens in a flash second.

my dad has an mbp with a hitachi drive, its very good, hitachi looks like a cheap company, but on my dads mbp, its pretty good

i have a wd external hd, and not satisfied wit it AT ALL. its doing its job alright, but its like louder than an atomic bomb going off in an airplane!!!

Maybe you would care if you looked at the specs. I've seen postings here and
on other forums showing factory-installed HD models with manufacturer specs
ranging from about 60 MB/s to 95 MB/s sustained R/W speeds.

I just don't want to know.
What's the point in knowing I could have had a faster hard drive...I don't want to spoil the fun I'm having with my iMac right now.

Let's say I WOULD care, then what?
Replacing the hard drive with a faster one?
Any idea how difficult it is to open the new alu iMac?
I like the silence of the WD hard drive I am having right now, any guarantees the newly installed hard drive will be as silent?

FWIW, on my system Safari opens in a flash as well (2.4 Ghz with WD hard drive), honestly.

I can't say that I've ever used a Seagate (not sure what is in my iMac) but with past experiences I am most impressed with Western Digital and least impressed with Hitachi.

Seagate at work, Western Digital at home. Both have been flawless.

I've got a WD in my iMac and it's great - silent and fast.

I've had bad experiences in the past with Maxtor drives and I understand that Seagate have been sharing technology since they bought Maxtor a while back so I'd tend to steer clear of Seagate. IBM/Hitachi drives have served me well over the years and Samsung drives are really good and are probably my favourite of the lot.

So, I'd choose Samsung, WD, Hitachi, Seagate, Pen and Paper, Maxtor (in that order)

Had a WD5000AAKS in two 24" 2.8GHz iMacs. Very quiet and fast, although one had noticeably more vibration than the other (and a louder hum).

Still, both were far quieter than the Seagate 7200.10 I received in another 24" 2.8GHz iMac. This is much louder when idle (though far from 'loud' in an absolute sense - you have to put your ear to it to hear the noise, or sit close to the computer in a silent room).

The seek noises are very loud though. Far louder than the WD5000AAKS. Very distracting when the OS decides to page things in/out of the disk. Also seems a bit slower.

I have a Seagate in my Early 2006 iMac. It's noisy, you can hear it with the fans in vacuum cleaner mode, it's failed once, but other than that it's fine
