Hi all,
Over the last few weeks or so, "hiutil" and "helpd" have been causing my MB to freeze from under a minute to several minutes at a time. This has happened repeatedly (several times a day at least) in both Lion and after my Mountain Lion upgrade.

my computer:
late '08 Macbook alum. unibody 5,1
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
500GB hybrid drive (4gb flash+7200rpm drive)

I use Chrome and VMware (w/ Windows XP) frequently through the day. I have observed the problem by checking the Activity Monitor which reports hiutil or helpd maxing out my processor 99%+. I did upgrade both of those around the time the problem started, but it may be coincidence--I don't know enough to tell. It has happend when VMware Fusion is NOT running, if that helps. I pretty much always have Chrome up and iTunes frequently as well.

I checked and repaired disk permissions, btw. I'm not sure how to prevent this from occurring and could use whatever advice you have.

many thanks,
Chris

Do you have a page that addresses my problem? I searched google before I posted here, but the problems with hiutil were unrelated to mine, and generally most of them were from Lion installs.

I was using Lion since the week it came out and now ML, but the problem only started a couple of weeks ago.

I highly doubt there's a difference in helpd and hiutil in Lion vs. ML, and in fact there are other threads on this forum that discuss both those two processes.

Also, they are pretty heavily discussed on the first 5 links from Googling hiutil. I checked. I'm not going to read through the google thinks for you.

And it's highly unlikely somebody on here is going to either, but hey maybe just sit back, and hope someone does. Might be waiting awhile...

I understand that the issue is not much different between Lion and ML for me. But again, I read through those threads and google and they largely deal with Lion install and reindexing, and RAM consumption, whereas I have a CPU problem.

Rocky, maybe you have to deal with a lot of idiots in your daily life-which somehow justifies your rudeness, but please take the time to read my posts before responding. I have already exhausted the google search before you posted. The problems are different. You come across pretty rude and when people read what you have posted they aren't going to help me--thinking you already given me some magical link. Thanks anyways.

If there is someone else who may have a solution, I would gratefully and humbly love to hear from you.
