So I decided to stop using VisualHub/HandBrake to re-encode my MKV's here as I figured out that I could just switch the container with a mov-container (by using Save As in Quicktime) and add it to iTunes that way. Then I have no quality loss from the original MKV and it's A LOT faster than actually re-encoding the file.

But now it won't transfer to the AppleTV, even though both the resolution and the fps is within accepted range. Is this a matter of the bitrate of the video? Or is there something else going on? (It says it's H.264 just as the converted ones does).

Will hacking my AppleTV fix this in any way? Or is it iTunes holding back the file? Is there anything I can do to get this working?

Wait! Come again?!

So you ripped the DVD with MTR or Ripit? It preserves the original video quality. You then open the file and go to "save as" in QuickTime Pro? Then what? Will it transfer to iPod Touch or iPhone?

I'm confused too. How did you get the TS folder to open in Quicktime?

Edit: Oh wow...sorry! I'll learn to read someday.

Uh... guys, the OP said an MKV, not a DVD rip.

He's trying to change the container for a MKV "file" to be used on an ATV, not a "vob" inside a VIDEO_TS folder.

As to the OP's question... I haven't done it myself, so I can't help ya. I was just trying to clear up the confusion. ;)

who knows ? could be bitrate, could use p-pyramid ... any one of a hundred things. *if* you hack it with perian or xbmc or nitoTV or something the atv *might* be able to play it however you will lose the use of the atv's gpu for decoding.

Personally, I would just re-encode it to a format that you know is compatible.

There's a big old thread on this. It won't work on Apple TV/iPhone etc. mkvs are usually encoded at High L5.1 but the Apple TV can only support Main L3.1 or 4.1 (though dynaflash has high 3.1 working).

EDIT: Didn't see dynaflash had already posted
