Hey guys. I just downloaded MSN Messenger for the Mac, and now I have this "disk drive" thingy icon on my desktop titled Microsoft Messenger. I deleted it or "ejected" it and it was gone, but then when I started up MSN again it's back . Any way to get rid of it for good?

You'll be wanting to learn how to correctly install applications in OS X. You typically download a DMG file which expands to a "drive" that mounts on your Desktop. Then you must drag the application in that "drive" to your Applications folder. You can then eject the "drive" and delete or save the DMG file.

ok now mac already is starting to make me mad and regret buying it.
i downloaded the flip4mac thing and when i tried to install it said i needed quitime 6.5 or higher or something...so i downloaded a dmg of quicktime 7.1...now when i click that it expands to a drive...when i open the drive i see a file so i click it and its the install file...i install it and restart the computer and now still no quicktime cause i still cant install flip4mac...

I think you're going to need to take a deep breath. Alright, good. Open up the DMG then drag the QT application to your "Applications" folder, or where ever you are going to put that particular file. Then, drag the DMG into the trash.
Don't regret buying it over something like that. Getting your feet wet is half the fun!

So it sounds like maybe the first thing you should do is go to Software Update (in the "Apple menu" in the upper left corner of your screen) and run that to see what software updates are available for you, and then install them. Depending on what's available, you'll probably have to restart your computer after installing the updates.

Take it easy... if you're new to Mac OS X you can't expect to understand everything about it straight away. Take some time to read MR's excellent guides, oh, and you'll find everyone here is really keen to help too.

Because QuickTime is a complicated piece of software in comes with an installer as opposed to the simple application bundles like MSN. Once you open the drive, double-click the installer and click through the options to run it. This really should all be taken care of through Software Update, but it's okay to do it manually.
Once it's been installed (and you've probably had to reboot), you can check Safari to see what version of the QuickTime plug-in you have installed by choosing the "Installed Plug-ins" option from Safari's Help menu. The latest version is 7.1.2.

I know this thread is about installing MSN messanger but I bought Office for my MacBook and it came with MSN messanger (which I actually wanted) but it also installed Microsoft Messanger (which is a peice of ****) and I cant figure out how to uninstal MSM. I've tried dragging it to the trash, that didnt work. I want to keep MSN messanger though cause I like it. Can anybody help me out here?
oh and if there is a thread about this already, sorry for the trouble and a link would be nice.
