Hey I was wondering if there is anyway that I could select 2 sound output divices for sound to be played threw. Like have my Harmon Kardon Speakers playing at the same time that I have another set of usb speakers playing? That would be the ultimate cool for a music junkie like myself - oh the possibilitys - one speaker in each corner of my room to have a surround sound like effect! So yes is there any setting I can hit or application or hack I can use? This would be sooooo awesome

p.s. I thought about editing the sound pref interface to allow multiple selections but then I thought about it might make Panther become angry with me. Its usualy not a good idea to anger a Panther...

I also thought about just using cable splitters but then that is most likely alot more risky (for the speakers which require certain voltages and such) than just having the computer send the signal to multiple speakers... right?

Check out M-Audio and get a surround sound audio card. You will probably end up with the sound being off slightly if you were even successful with the regular audio and USB audio at the same time.

I've done this. I have a pair of logitech speakers, and I had a sony sound system.

In the back of your mac, there is a sound out port. You can buy a splitter, which will make it like having 2 sound out ports.

I just hooked up my logitechs to one of the sound out things, and then I hooked up my sony system to the other.

I had 4 speakers playing every time I used iTunes. 2 Sonys, 2 Logitechs.

Is that what you are trying to do?

Shouldn't cost you more than 5$

Well what I'm trying to have my mac do is send the sound signal to 2 different usb devices at the same time. Thats why I can't really buy a splitter for the sound out port - because they are both usb devices and if i were to split a usb port thats in essence a usb hub. What I really want to do is via software or a hack have my mac send the sound signal to both devices at once. I know this can be done because I found apple documentation from waaay long back in the years of system 7 that talked about multiple sound device output - I will try and attach this file

Ok I think I just figured out a better explanation to what it is I am trying to do - I want to use 2 different Audio drivers at the same time

I know for a fact that this is techniquly possible because I can, for example, assign one audio driver to a program like garageband which lets you pick the output device, and yet I can still listen to music on iTunes with a different audio driver at the same time - the result is my iTunes music playing threw my soundsticks and the garageband music playing threw my stereo. The only thing that I want to change about this situation is that I want Both audio drivers doing the same task (playing my itunes music)

I hope that more clearly explanes my objective
(I'm starting to think about teaming up with one of my friends and writing an iTunes plug in if I can't find any other way... but that might be really really hard...)

it is technically possible (and i'd assume quite easy) but not available in any software i know of. sys pref only allows you to select one output, but allows different outputs for different things (i.e. garage band and itunes like you said, or my alerts go through built in audio while all the rest is routed thru my digital coax).

i'd check out audio hijack or hijack pro, i believe if anything could do this, these would.

usb can handle audio? amazing .

now that i think about it...you might overload the usb bus by sending two audio signals to it at the same time.
