Thinking about doing this but wondering how it worked out for others.
For me, I always request a hold for pick up at UPS CC or Fedex Ship & Print Center depending on what Apple (Pre-orders always UPS, but down the road they use Fedex). I will never let my phone be delivered to home. Just never.

But picking it up at Fedex or UPS usually goes very smooth no issues.

Do you just call UPS/Fedex and arrange this?
Once you get the tracking number from Apple then you can either call or go to Fedex.com or UPS.com and view your tracking there and do any changes as you need. Make sure you sign up for UPS Mychoice if you haven't as it's free. For Fedex you do not need to make an account to request hold for pick up.

Always hold mine for pickup at ups cc. Pickup it up morning of release day is much better than waiting all day for them to deliver it.

I'm going to use UPS My Choice and have it go to access point after one attempt. The access point is open early on saturdays where UPS Hub opens only on weekdays at noon. I can wait for monday if need be

Usually no issues at all with holding a package. But last year I had the UPS experience from hell. Somehow my order was marked "return to sender customer refuses package". Mind you a delivery attempt was never made and this action occurred at 3am. UPS couldn't do anything to stop this action or even figure out where the package was. The tracking showed it bouncing back and forth between Los Angeles (where I live) and Kentucky for a few weeks before it was finally shipped back to Apple. After a week of endless convos with them and Apple, finally an apple supervisor cancelled that order in my account and shipped me a different iPhone X. That one arrived in a couple days with no issues.
