Holy Bloat Batman!!! 1.6 GB!!??

Keynote 3 is 1.01 GB (yes G as in Gigabites) and Pages 2 is 853.6 MB. What did they do to the code? Is there not anyway to make these programs with out the bloat! I though M$ was bad. My whole Virtual PC Image is only 1.2 GB and thats for a whole operating system! iWork is just a word processor and presentation software. I know its cool to have templetes and all but they are not going to improve my life that much better to eat up my HD space.

iLife 06 isn't much better coming in at 6.12 GB. I'm wondering if Apple is getting a kick back from the hard drive companies! A little you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. Ish!

I hear ya. My music collection is 36 GB, but almost 2 gigs for a word processor and keynote. The whole microsoft Office Suite is under 400 MB. This release of iWorks is like 90% bigger then last years and is I doubt 90% more functional then last years.

I just checked and here is the comparison

Pages 1 = 397.2 MB ---> Pages 2 = 853.6 MB | ~ 2.2 Larger
Keynote 2 = 206.7 MB ---> Keynote 3 = 1.01 GB | ~ 5x Larger!

It's probably the templates, documentation, localized GUI's etc. If you check out the contents of most application packages you tend to find the actual 'code' is a very small part of the app.

Over 1GB for a non gaming, non pro app. Dear lordy, that is interesting, especially from Apple, who pride themselves in keeping code tidy. Could it be anything to do with being Universal? Or just loads more templates etc?

I've got the 8gig cut down version of X-Plane for mac installed, the full version is...60 gigabytes.

Again, even if the code is universal it would only double the size of the executable code in the bundle. The resources stay the same regardless of processor. You can check for yourself. Go to the application's folder in /Applications and right click on it you'll get an option 'show package contents'. This will open the applications bundle in the finder. There'll be a bunch of folders

'Resources' - this is where the templates will most likely be as well as the GUI nib files.
'Mac OS' - where the compiled code will be
'Frameworks' - more compiled code.

If you get info on these folders you will see how little of the bundle's size comes from the compiled code and how much is templates, icons, documentation, localized GUIs, help files etc.

Yeah this is the culprit, partially. I went through the app files and I deleted all the Language files and got Pages down to 258 MB and went thought Keynote and deleted all the High-def templetes and got it down 581.4. I'm sure I could get Keynote at least 100 MB smaller if I wanted to.

But why not make this an option when you install the program. Imagine some poor shlub when whe installs a consumer level app on his little ibook to find the book will hardly start up because all of his hard drive is used up for a word processer and presentation software. If I had not deleted these files I'd be eraseing these programs off of my powerbook. On my 80 GB (really like 78 GB usable) that comes to around 2.5% of my harddrive space... thats a lot really for an consumer app. If I was using a dedicated workstation for Final Cut Pro or something I'd say bring it on, throw in the kitchen sink too, but for a personal mac I'd rather have that space for my pictures, music, and movies and such. This is the type of computer these programs were designed to run on and Apple should have given us at least the "full" install option or the "smallest size" install option or even "choose your language" as I bet a large number of custumers would like to store some pictues as well on there ibook.

Its definitley localisations and themes. There was a stripped down version of Pages going about, sans themes and English only, and it was just over 80mb. I suspect Keynote is similar. If youve ever downloaded Keynote themes you know they are pretty huge in file sizes.
