Holy Hanna, Why do many EL Capitan Issues?

I have a brand new iMac 27" retina 5K and thinking of installing El Capitan......

But my God, looking at all the new threads with issues, I'm a bit paranoid to upgrade a brand new system that is working perfect.

I suppose if I use Time machine I can always go back if something gets mucked up?
Just sort of surprised at all the problems listed....

Yesterday I just got my MBP 15 inch, 16gb ram, 2.5Ghz I7, AMD R9 Radeon, 512 SSD. First thing I did was do a fresh install of El Capitan. No issues at all, very fast and smooth. You have twice the specs as I do, so you should be more than fine.

As KALLT says, you will hear a lot about a few people who have issues whilst the vast majority of users will carry on. What you need to look at is if several people are having issues with specific applications which you may need to run. Outlook 2011 looks like it may be one such application.

If in doubt, make a clean install, do not upgrade.

It seems like that users that upgrade from a earlier OS X version are reporting problems.

2014 mini here. I've had no issues with the update.
Don't like electric blue folders foisted upon me, and my barometer stopped working.
However I'm sure there'll soon be a color fix, and barometer will work again as soon as I can remember the name of the executable I put in usr/bin.
Over all, El Capitan feels more like 10.10.6 than 10.11.0. It's not a major game changer.

It's statistically extremely unlikely you'll run into any serious issues. People post here only because a) their issue is so rare and serious that they seek out a forum to get help; b) they are real nitpickers.
It's like watching evening news and making a picture of the world based on it. Sure, there are wars and violence, but vastly out of proportion to what you'd judge from their coverage.
Plus, indeed, in the computer world we have Time Machine. There's no such luxury elsewhere

Install it and most likely you will be fine. If you made your OS installing decision based on the MacRumours forum you'd have never upgraded anything from the dawn of time.

But guarantee you this time next year, all those currently complaining about El Capitan, will be writing how OS X 10.12 is "No where near as stable as El Capitan" and therefore are not installing it.

No issues here at all, I'm quite impressed for it being a X.0 release. Like everyone else said take a backup and try it out, if you don't like it just restore from your backup.

For what it's worth, I'm a 365 subscriber and I'm using the up-to-date Office 2016 with zero problems in El Capitan.

Same here, did not have a problem on my testbed laptop, and have been using El Capitan on my primary MacBook Pro for over 24 hours so far with no issues.

Just to prevalent of an issue with Outlook 2011/2016 and El Capitan to risk it now until they announce fixes for 2016, which is what I'm using.
Seems like it's not if it will crash but when...

I see, maybe it's really an issue then and I'm just one of the lucky ones who don't have any problems. And then, I pretty much only use Word. If you don' want to risk it, then by all means you should wait with the OS upgrade until Microsoft issues updates for the apps.

I've been monitoring here and also reddit.com/r/osx and even though it's only a couple days out, I feel like I'm noticing fewer issues than with Yosemite. I still haven't updated myself, though. Early days.

I upgraded my 2011 MBP today from Yosemite, with absolutely no problems. Every single application works - MS Office 2011, Capture One, photoshop CS6 with plugins, browsers, thunderbird, chromecast, vmware and vuescan are the biggies I can think of. Tested them all one by one, with no problem.

I had to upgrade little snitch to 3.6 and it was fine afterwards.

This is by far the smoothest Mac OS upgrade I've ever done. In fact, this is the only in-place upgrade I've ever done successfully, while I'd usually just install the OS on a new partition or disk with previous releases due to some problem or the other with an in-place upgrade.

So far 10.11 has been solid for me. I've not noticed any issues.

There are issues.
From the first time in a decade I 've using macs, I stuck 'outside' my mbp, without being able to get in osx.
No yosemite now, no el capitan too. Just nothing. I have to restore backuped image, but this state (unusable computer) is totally unacceptable.

That doesn't mean that it isn't true. (it's all relative) Upgraded my late 2013 iMac from Mavericks to El Cap (avoided Yosemite)... the result was a noticeable step back in performance and compatibility.

You will find in Every OS release (Yes, everyone of them) members come here to make some complaints or issues to report. If you go by those that have these complaints you will never upgrade to the next version. For me, this OS El Capitan is faster than Yosemite, but that is just me.

Depends on how you use OSX. I currently don't have anything on my Retina iMac that I really need. So I just did an upgrade and its definitely snappier and no issues so far.

General rule with ALL software is do not upgrade anything that you rely on until its been out for a while and you research it. I don't care if it's an IOS app, Windows or some Unix product on a corporate server. Never never never upgrade unless its to fix an issue or its been out for a while.

I've actually had LESS problems with Office 2016/el Cap than I did with Office 2011/el Cap.

Since Office 2016 has been updated, I've no longer had the reboot/Outlook immediately crashes problem either
