I took a 7.5 min video last night on my iPhone 4s and the file is 1.5GB!!!! Is it shooting uncompressed or something? This is really huge for an h.264 file.

That's a little large, but not terribly. I figure about 80MB/minute on my iPhone 4, which is 720p (1280x720). The 4S is 1080p (1920x1080), or 2.25 times the pixels of the iPhone 4. I would predict an average 180MB/min, or 1.35GB for 7-1/2 minutes.

I was asking a similar question about two weeks ago. (iPhone 4s launch weekend)

More specifically, how the iOS 5 doesn't give us the option to REDUCE the image/quality on videos and pictures.

FWIW, See my thread, here:

Apple needs to add a toggle to allow us to shoot in either 720p or 1080p.
IMHO 720p perfectly adequate for anything I plan to share online and is a fine balance of quality vs file size.

But with that being said, I am blown away with what I am seeing out of my 4S.

The videos are very large. I typically store my photo library on the SSD of my macbook air. Depending on how many videos I shoot I may need to rethink this.

Actually if it's 1080p/30fps then uncompressed would be about 85GB for 7.5 minites.;)

It is what it is. Just import your videos and whatnot to iPhoto when you get home and wipe them out. It's the downside of great quality video and we chose to buy the device that does it.

I recall an article in TUAW awhile ago stating that on the iPhone 4, 1 minute of video recording roughly came out to about 200MB in size.
