Well.... seeing as I wanted an adjustable stand and didn't want to pay $129 I went to Home Depot to make my own. I have experience in fabrication so this ended up being a simple afternoon project. This was my inspiration.
After an hour looking around Home Depot I came away with these items.
..total cost $15. So far....
The middle item came with angled aluminum with a thread for a screw which I planned on using for holding up the ipad.
Just need to cut down the screw so it wont stick out too much below the pipe.
and this is what I plan to use for stabilizer at the end of the pipe.
My stabilizer. That white plastic ball isn't removable but that is okay. The white ring and metal clip won't be used.
Here is how the angled aluminum will be placed inside. The screw will be cut to fit and not stick out the bottoms. This was the original plan as you will see things change.
Fabrication begins.
For starters the sides were cut just enough to fit the angledaluminum and to drill a hole for the bottom screw that holds it in place. As you can see the screws were changed to aluminum post screws. I needed the heads of the screws to be flat because the old screws would interfere with how the pipe would sit on the desk.
Another item bought later were grommets for the holes that hold the stabilizer in place. I needed four since I would be having four holes for a two position stand.
Here is the first hole drilled with grommet and stabilizer in place.
DONE!! all four holes cut, tape removed, cleaned up and looking preeetttyy.
I love it. I added the rubber edging on the pipe to protect the iPad from being scratched by the metal edge. There is some cleaning up to do but I am currently using it and love it. Next thing to do is cut a notch in the pipe for the home button when it is in portrait mode.
