What format are they in? The Apple TV is very specific about what it can view.

Use Handbrake, Apple TV 2 or Universal Setting and you should be fine.

The format of the movies is .mov. Looks like they are QuickTime movies.

Get Media Info > Drag in the file > Export the log as a text file > open the text file > Copy and paste the log here.

That will give us all the specific info about the file, knowing the container (.mov) isn't enough.

How do I do this? I tried right clicking on the file and hitting get info, but I don't see how to export as text.

If you're using right click > Get Info in Finder, that doesn't give the right info. You need to download a program to analyse the file and display an output.

Download it here
Drag the file on to the window
Go to View > Text (In the menu bar)
The copy and paste the text in the window here

ok here you go!

Your movie uses the MPEG2 codec which is not supported on any Apple device. You'll have to re-encode it (using something like handbrake). I see that it's an iMovie event, you could also open it in iMovie and export as H264 (Share > Export Movie > Medium size).

Well, I will be uploading dozens of little DVDs to the Mac with our home movies. So with that many files to get ready to share on ATV, what method do you suggest?

Do a batch encode with handbrake, you should be able to queue it up and have it do it's thing over night. The ATV preset is good, but it will give you two audio tracks (AAC and AC3) which you don't need since your audio is mono, also it wont deinterlace which you need.

I notice you have 2 audio tracks, are they duplicates?

I've made a preset based on ATV2, with only an AAC audio track and deinterlacing. You can get it here. Put it in Library/ApplicationSupport/Handbrake (replace your own), then start Handbrake, you'll see it in the side bar (toggle presets).

Wow I am way over my head with that one! I'm guessing Handbrake is a program you want me to download, but no idea what a batch encode is.

And why would there be two audio tracks? That's so weird.

Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself here :p

Handbrake is for converting files, the conversion processes is known as 'encoding', so a batch encode allows to add all the files you want to a queue in handbrake and it will encode them one by one with no input from you.

I have no idea either tbh. If you have VLC media player, you can toggle between audio tracks in the Audio menu so you can see what's on the second track. I think it's just a duplicate.

I would use Handbrake to convert the files to what?

And once I upload all my videos, I can convert them all at the same time?

The audio has to be a duplicate because I certainly wasn't trying to make a second audio file!

It's common for people to include two audio files, a simple AAC file decode-able by the aTV for direct viewing on the TV, and an AC3 file that contains the digital audio for when you want to break out the surround sound system.

Hitman1717 hasn't encoded anything yet, his source files have two mono PCM tracks.

I have downloaded Handbreak. When I go to choose the files that I want to convert, none of them are able to be highlighted to click "ok"

what should I do?
