I was texting a ton last night, landscape of course, and when going from the Messages application to another (which also utilized the landscape feature), the home screen was obviously still portriat.

I would love the option to landscape the home screen. Nothing crazy, but when turned, the icons and labels just simply do an about-face and swivel to be read in landscape. Nothing would move, the dock would stay on one of the sides (depending on what way you turned it, obviously).

I can't do a mock-up, but I hope I'm making my idea clear. Not a big deal, but would be a nice little feature to keep everything consistent while switching apps, if you happen to be in landscape.

i understand your idea, but it wouldn't work because the spacing between rows and columns is different. look how much space there is next to an icon and then below it. the label would be over lapping the icon below.

I would love to see this. I use landscape now on all the apps that allow it, and it does look funny when switching between apps and the homescreen is on its side

Ideally I would like to be able to use the phone completely in landscape when still (I find portrait easier when I'm texting whilst walking for example), including unlocking the phone.

There really would need to be a setting to turn it off though as I know not everyone would welcome this feature :D

As with other apps/etc - Apple could easily solve this problem by adjusting # of apps per page when in Landscape mode.

I'd be cool only if you could turn it off. there's nothing more annoying than texting/emailing from bed only to slightly turn your iPhone and it goes landscape. I could only imagine my anxiousity of the home screen turning landscape.

Either off - or a sensitivity level as to how much tilt would activate it.

There was a jailbroken mobile substrate extension called SpinBoard being developed. It would do exactly that. A beta version got leaked quite a while ago, but no updates have come from the devs since. I think the idea is dead now.

God I hate that.......

I really can't find the point to a landscape home screen. It's not like you're doing anything productive, the entire point is for you to get to the application you wish to use.

Soon we're going to have threads on a landscape phone app..

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!

I could use that when I'm talking on the phone via the earbuds. Think of the energy you will save just by not rotating the phone 90 degrees to call someone in the app when you go from an app in landscape to the phone app.

That looks awesome - nice mockup.

It's so simple, but I just think with so much landscape ability throughout the phone, why not the home screen too? Couldn't hurt, especially with on/off/sensitivity abilities.

Can you do a mock up of the lock screen in landscape too?

I wish Apple would completely do away with landscape. I never use it. I hate it. I really wish I could turn it off.

omg, this is the worse ever, i would like SMS/MMS to go back to portrait only, or at least have an option

It's amazing... complaints from every corner of the universe for two years about landscape texting, now people want it gone. Wow.

I guess I'll sit back and wait for that "I hate copy/paste, MMS" thread too... sheesh.

I wouldn't mind it but not a big deal for me. For those wishing Apple would get rid of it..... get a life, don't turn to landscape mode, problem solved.

I like 5x5 like this:

I really wish I could lock my phone to either landscape or portrait even if only for 15 minutes at a time.

I tend to use landscape way more and hate having to fight with the accelerometer whenever I'm in bed.

my point was that the icons couldn't just spin round like the OP suggested. the spacing would have to change as it animates the rotation and imo that would just look awkward.

i dont know how they could make it work without changing the current layout to 3 icons per row because each icon is effectively a rectangle, not a square. the spacing between icons side by side is the same as the spacing between the bottom of the text and the top of the icon below. the mockup above highlights this and it just looks cluttered. i think there is more chance of a pig being genetically engineered with wings than apple changing the grid for the home screen. especially for something as pointless as this. i mean, the icons are not going to move so that what is on the right in portrait is on the right in landscape, so it doesn't effect ease of use (ie, "i know facebook is in the bottom right of my screen" or "i know messages is in the top left".
