iPod home sharing network

This might be a stupid question. But with the home sharing thing since it's linked with iTunes account do you have to be on the same wireless/wired network? And is it only songs that you buy on iTunes?

its not limited to songs that you buy on itunes.. its anything in your library, music, videos and even apps, however I wasnt able to get all my apps transfered, just a few..as for location, I dont know.. The Guy in the apple keynote demo'd it with his wifes library and im guessing she was at home and not at the event...
