I bought a HomePod at Best Buy in early 2024. I've used it periodically but not all that much. In the last 2-3 months, its started activating and playing music out of nowhere. It will just suddenly announce "Here's a song from your library" (or something like that), and start playing. It's totally unpredictable, and can vary in what it does. At first, it usually starts playing a random song from my library in Music - I do not have a subscription to Apple Music or any other service. It will play it for a while and then stop. Then a while later it will start again, sometimes with the same song, sometimes with a new one. It will then play a few seconds and stop, then the same clip again, and go on with this for a while. It will also often progressively raise the volume. Using the touch controls on the top or my iPhone volume controls have no effect. Ultimately the only way to control it is to unplug it. I've tried turning voice controls off, resetting it, and deleting it from the Home app. All to ultimately no effect. This 45 second video is an example of it going haywire after it had started up out of nowhere, with the volume steadily increasing towards the end. Again, I did nothing to select the song that its playing, it just chose it at random from my library. Its software is 18.1. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

id guess a malfunctioning touch sensor, but it could be a weird software bug too.

have you tried factory reset?

OK thanks. I've been pursuing things and am now actually more confused than before. I did the factory reset and that had no effect. I also discovered that I had in fact purchased it in October of 2023 so the warranty has already expired. Then I bought another HomePod on Saturday - I had been thinking of doing so for some time - and it immediately started displaying the same problems as the first one. They do what the uploaded video in the OP shows when operated by themselves or when paired in stereo. So I have no idea what is going on. On the plus side, I had been thinking my 2023 HomePod was likely now a $300 doorstop, but with the second one doing the same thing I'm now seriously questioning whether there is actually anything wrong with the first one. I have been using an iPhone 12 to operate them, and they are all 3 using iOS 18.2. The HomePods will start playing out of nowhere even when I have quit the Music and Home apps - and I mean I have quit them, they are not just pushed off the iPhone's screen. The only way I can effectively control them is to unplug them.

Are they plugged into the same outlet/circuit? possible something else is making some noise on the line. Failing electronics can cause interference that travels over a power line. and affects other electronics, touch screens are particularly sensitive.

Try moving the homepods to a different outlet on the other side of the house.

if that sorts it, you should figure out what's causing the issue and get it replaced / repaired.

A ferrite (that big lump on some cables) can block it. you can buy them loose and snap them onto your cables.
