For the love of god why can't we place a picture on our home screen.. I was able to do this on my phones years ago....

Jailbreak and you'll be able to do that. Add more icons to your Dock, as well as customise.

Jailbreak it.

Have you seen the jailbroken home screens with a picture???
Its pretty much useless with all the icons over the picture

Well, you'd need to jailbreak. Other than that, there's really no way.

Just my opinion: Having a picture, as a background, would definitely ruin the UI.

Oh really? I'd say backgrounds behind the home screen can look good if done right...

From the wired "6 Reasons to Jailbreak Your iPhone" article. Oh, and that background can be found here (MR forum thread). It's subtle enough not to distract from the UI, but looks dam good rather then just plain black.

Holy wow. I used that background forever ago. It looks great. But I'm going to agree with the majority that most pictures make the homescreen look cluttered. I prefer the plain black.

Has anyone else noticed that the Safari icon looks kinda different? I don't get it, what firmware is this? My homescreen looks nothing like it.

It's a theme from Cydia. Take a closer look. ALL of the icons are different. ;)

That is a jailbroken phone where someone changed the icons not standard

Jailbreaking is too much of a hassle. I've jailbreaked my iPod touch and I don't really need any of the jailbreak-features.

My phone is factory unlocked. I can MMS, tether and all that.. So mainly if I'd jailbreak it'll be only for theming and I don't really need that.

Do you have a link to that background? (Not the theme as I'm not jailbroken currently)

As I said in my post, someone posted it in this thread, but here it is:

I'm sure you've heard it a many time, but jailbreaking couldn't be easier. I won't go into the details, they are in the hacking section of the forums, but you could have a background or even a theme up and running in a matter of minutes.

I only jailbreak because I like having no icon titles, a homescreen background, and weather info on my status bar. Also, fun modifications like GRiP, and Stacks. Others like to take it farther then that, and then there's always the advantage of finding non-approved app store apps on Cydia (Ahem, Google Voice Apps, uMonitor, etc...).

I think you're confusing jailbreaking with breaking out of jail. Cause jailbreaking is easier than pouring a bowl of cereal. ;)

Yeah, actually, I have.

Oh and, Google Voice isn't available in my country. And no one even knows about it, heh. :)
Maybe, the only jailbreak-only app I could find a tad useful could be Backgrounder, or whatever it's called..

Hah, well, I don't know why but I've always tried to refrain from jailbreaking my iPhone. I did jailbreak my iPod touch several times, though.

How is it easy??? I've always found the whole process a real PITA.

Really? With redsn0w I've jailbroken numerous iPods and my iPhone within, literally, one minute.

Point redsn0w to your current firmware -> Let it download the necessary files -> Follow the on-screen timers to get into DFU mode -> redsn0w automatically installs everything and reboots the device.

Very, very, very easy.
