HomeShare music from iMac to iPad and then Airplay to AppleTV?

Hopefully that title made sense?

What I ultimately want to do is have access to my iTunes library (on my iMac) and control it from my iPad. I know I can do this with HomeSharing and it works well. But the next step is that I really want that music to play through my AppleTV (& stereo system). So, in other words, I just want the iPad to sit in the middle between the iTunes library and the AppleTV so I have a wireless way to control and select playback.

It seems that if I can use AirPlay to send when my iPad is playing to the AppleTV, then this would work.

I just don't know if the iPad can both HomeShare and stream music FROM the iMac and then AirPlay the same playback TO the AppleTV. Make sense?

If this doesn't work, is there any other way to do this? The point is that my iPad doesn't have all of my music, so I want to access my iMac library. But I don't want to control playback via my iMac, nor the AppleTV interface. I want to do it with my iPad so I can be anywhere inside (or outside) the house.

There is a free app you can download from the app store that allows you to control iTunes from your iPad. My wife has it and it works perfectly.

Make sure Homesharing is enabled on your Apple TV as well. Then, as mic j said, download the Apple Remote app (free from the App store). The app allows for control of the Apple TV. You can find your music library on Apple TV by going to the Computers channel on the front screen of Apple TV.

I just tried what you want to do, and I can confirm that it works -- my iPad will "pull" music from my computer and "push" it to my TV. Although mic j is right, you might find it just as easy to use the Remote app (from Apple) to control iTunes (on your computer) with your iPad, and direct the output to the TV, to do what you want to do:

Launch the music app on your iPad
Select a shared library (e.g. your computer, "More" --> "Shared" --> {library name})
Tap the AirPlay icon and select your TV
Play your music and enjoy

One advantage to using the Remote app is that, unlike your iPad, your computer can simultaneously AirPlay to multiple devices (itself, TV, Airport Express, etc), and you can control which devices play (and set relative volumes) all from the iPad. Either way you get access to the same library content, and you can play it on your TV, which sounds like your goal.

There is also an app for Mac and iOS called AirFoil where you can broadcast basically any audio signal your Mac can get over any AirPlay, iOS and OS X device simultaneously and control it from your phone or iPad.

The same company that makes the AirFoil app also makes an OS X app to stream Sirius Satellite radio, so I use a combo of these 2 apps a lot, for broadcasting Howard 100 of course
