Is there a way to do this? (not appleTV, i need to be able to watch .avi, etc.)
thanks

Not that I've seen, there is a company in Australia that has the technology (they build video decoders and processors) being touted on its website but no real product for consumers. The only thing readily available right now is for presentations (ie will not handle video streaming due to processor limitations)

You may have to surf Google for a while

I'm not exactly sure about this, but there's something my church uses. It's essentially a set of little boxes, with composite (ew) output, and maybe s-video. Not sure what the range is, but I'd estimate the church uses them at somewhere around 100 ft? Not sure what the input is, I'm fairly sure it does composite, but there's a chance it also does DVI and/or VGA. The brand name escapes me at the moment, but I'll see if I can find out for you.

as technology currently stands theres no real simple way to wirelessly transfer video without streaming - the transfer speeds just arnt up to it. (apart from some bulky specialist kit which sorta defeats any of the benefits of no wires...).

A media streamer is the only viable option and that=software, network and a whole different kettle of fish

is there a way to just send video like the appleTV but with avi's... or can u hack the appleTV to do this?
