Is it possible. My MBP is a few years old so I'm not talking about Mirroring...just Airplay a DVD with DVD Player to my Apple TV 2

720p is fine as they're only standard DVDs but I'd be interested to know if 5.1 also get's transmitted?

Thanks

You want to use airplay from your DVD player to your ATV? Do you have airplay capability on your DVD?

I tried it the other day and it wouldn't do it. I think it's a DRM restriction as airplay works fine but refuses to send the DVD video (shows as white and grey checks instead).

Even if it did work it wouldn't do 5.1

I haven't used Mountain Lion yet so I was asking for info from someone who had.
I have a broken DVD player and want to know whether I should splash out on a new Home Cinema system, or use Airplay in Mountain Lion to play DVDs from my MacBook Pro instead, ideally with 5.1 also

I don't think you can do it directly from the disk. However, it's really easy to rip the data from the disk and re-encode it to h264. Once that's done you can add it to iTunes and stream to any iOS device (including appletv).

Note, circumventing the DRM on the disk might be illegal in your area.

Understood. I have been ripping but when it's a complete season of House (24 Episodes) it's a real pain

I know all about that - I've just finished ripping my DVD/bluray collection to a media server. 500+ movies and 800+ tv show episodes. All I can say is, thank god for Subler.
