This afternoon I found out that I have won a $1000 scholarship from school, I happen to have my school paid for already so that is $1000 in my pocket to do what I please. So Leopard was released and with my iPhone purchase earlier this month and my desire for a second laptop (I would probably use my MacBook as the primary and this Linux Thinkpad as the secondary machine) I am thinking that with my student discount I could go ahead and get a MacBook. My first impulse was to only spend the $1000 and not dip into my personal bank account and in that case I could get the barebone MacBook for $999 and take advantage of Free Shipping and after the taxes I would have everything covered from what is in my "student" account.

However, I looked at the big difference $200 makes, the faster processor and the Dual layer burner. Okay, so assuming that I can possibly afford the faster system then comes the question of should I get the AppleCare plan or not. Or maybe a better question, since the machine will come with a 1 year warrenty can I decide to get the AppleCare before the one year warrenty is up to extend my warrenty?

If all goes well I hope to be ordering one by the end of the week and then hopefully it will be here by the end of next week.

$$$

:pwait till jan till the macbooks come out. Or Nov 12 for the new macpros

I think the OP wants a portable, not a Mac Pro. There is no firm schedule for any "new" Macbooks. If you need it now for school, buy it. They have just been updated a bit, so it will be a few months before you see another change to the lineup most likely.

Yea, you can upgrade to AppleCare at any time during that 1-year limited warranty all machines ship with.

Thank you for that information, that freed up $185 so I could go ahead and get the 2.2Ghz White MacBook. I kept everything standard as on the harddrive I was doubling what I have in my thinkpad and for RAM I don't do anything on the machine that requires more than a gig and if I do than I can just order the RAM later on and install myself or ask one of my mac user friends from school to assist me.

As it has been said time and time again on this forum and elsewhere, there is no reason to wait till the next great thing because it will come before I know it. If you spend all your time wishing you had the latest and greatest and not enjoying what you had then you won't ever enjoy what you have. I know that the 16gig iPhones will be out probably atleast early next year but that didn't stop be from getting the 8gig. As for the MacPro I am a student and so I am on the go almost all the time. My computer use is usually in the classroom or on the couches in my building. The portable is the best solution and I have been wanting a Mac Portable for years and finally I make that dream come true.

So in a few days (hopefully tomorrow or Saturday as I paid for next day shipping, only $27 and FedEx I think delivers next day packages on Saturday) Monday at
the latest I am sure I will be using the world's best operating system.

Congrats on your good fortune. I was able to buy my iMac with my left over grant money and hope to buy a MacBook next semester.

Thanks guys, since I paid for next day shipping (honestly $27 isn't much to pay for now having to wait a week) the MacBook is estimated to arrive tomorrow before 3PM. I might be at work before it gets here (keep getting a damn internal service error while trying to pre-sign on the Apple site for the package) but when I get home I will get the pleasure of un-packing and I will take plenty of photos.

Congratulations :D
You will love it!
