david pogue from the new york times wrote a faq shortly after macworld about his brief moments with the iphone. this was about a landscape keyboard:

“Any word on whether the keypad will be available in the horizontal screen mode allowing larger keys, albeit a smaller text window?” –That orientation wasn’t available in the prototype; Apple hasn’t decided whether or not to add the landscape keyboard layout. (Also, interestingly: rotating the iPhone to change the screen orientation only works counterclockwise–and only, as Mr. Jobs said, “When it makes sense.” That is, not all programs rotate.)

so, we don't know yet.

The iphone is fairly long for a phone, how are you going to hold in horizontal position like that and type with your thumbs? Looks impractical.

i don't think its any longer than a sidekick...

i really really hope this is another "feature" that is confirmed in the coming week. it would be so much easier to type this way and i don't see why apple would have a hard time implementing it.
