Horizontal stripes in 24" iMac ONLY!

For everyone who has a 24" iMac, take a closer look at your iMac following these instructions:

1. Download PixelCheck and use the "black" color background.
2. Make sure that the brightness is set to max.
3. Look at your screen from an angle.
4. It would be better if you turn off any lights on the room.
5. Look for horizontal stripes on your screen. They look greyish black.

You will notice that your screen has horizontal stripes that are going like this:

- Very dark black
- Lighter dark black
- Greyish black
- Grey
- Dark black ... and so on

These stripes are ONLY in the 24" iMac. All other Mac displays including the 20" iMac are free from this defect. The BestBuy Apple salesman was able to notice these when I showed them to him and he was disappointed that Apple is producing something like this, while the Apple store guys were not able to see anything for some reason .. go figure!

You might think that your 24" iMac does not suffer from this issue, but I am 200% sure that they are there but you are not looking close enough.


Does Steve Jobs know about this? I do not think so!

We desperately need another thread in which we turn happy iMac owners into miserable ones.

Here's for anyone who love their new 24 inch iMac:

Stop working on your new machine right away.
Download pixelcheck.
Set the brightness at max
Turn the lights off in your room.
Look close, really close.
Don't see anything yet, look closer!
Look really really close.
No that's not enough: CLOSER!!

Haha!, what did I tell you, yes you thought you were happy with your new iMac, didn't you?

Don't you think you should switch numbers 3 and 4? :p

You will notice that your screen has horizontal stripes that are going like this:

Do you find yourself with an awful lot of free time and no way to occupy it?

Of the most useless threads I've ever seen in MacForums this officially makes the top five, maybe even number one.

Is it because your eyes are NOT good enough to be able to see the different values given to different pixels on your screen?

Did you even bother and checked your screen? I know that you are not supposed to have any free time in Japan at all let alone posting here so what are you doing? Aren't you busy enough?

If you have time, then go ahead and check your screen and let us know your findings instead of being ... :eek:

I did and no, there are no horizontal lines. :p

Not that I'd really care if there were because if you have to turn off all your lights, put on a solid black screen and look at the display from an angle to see them it's not a problem to begin with.

In other words, if you're actually being serious and not making some lame attempt at a witty retort to all the gradient grumbling, then you're trying too hard to find "problems". This is why I asked if you might not have too much free time on your hands.

Well, there's your problem right there! (Sorry for the cheap shot).
Seriously, I have a 24" AL iMac, build date of December 2007, and the screen is flawless. I have not done what you have asked as there is no real-world reason to do so. I have worked in the Master Control area of broadcast television for the last 32 years. My eyes know monitors and most of their faults. This iMac screen is pretty darn good. I am more than happy with it and it performs what I need it to flawlessly. Lots of visitors really remark on its stunning display.
Now I am not saying that if I performed every one of the tests mentioned on these forums that it would pass 100% (not saying it wouldn't, either), but for my needs I couldn't ask for a better one. Obviously, if I were doing color/luminance-critical jobs, I would have gotten a Mac Pro with ACD, but I'm not.
Life is too short to go looking for problems, I guess....
