Hello all. I am using a Powerbook G4 15" 1.33 GHz. Just recently (within the past couple weeks) I have been noticing fewer and fewer applications that require networks to run simply won't work at all anymore. So far the following have happened:

-My IRC client won't let me login
-None of the FTP apps I use will let me login
-iTunes won't show shared music on any network anymore
-Various other file sharing apps (whose names I won't mention) won't even launch at all

When I do attempt to use these problem apps, little or nothing happens. If they start to launch, they bounce once in the dock then disappear or won't let me login. I have tried virtually everything I can think of. I have reinstalled all of the problem apps; I've verified and repaired my permissions; I have connected to numerous different networks (including my university's) and still the problems persist. I have been considering deleting network .plist files, but I'm not sure which ones are safe to delete or even relevant for that matter.

IRC and file sharing, I guess I can live without, but I need my FTP programs to do my web design work. Is there a way to reset my network settings to the factory defaults? I can't afford to do an entire system restore at this point, so I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. PLEEEASE. Thanks.

Additionally, this problem happens when working on either ethernet or airport with firewall either enabled or disabled. It should also be noted that Java Web Start won't launch either. Perhaps this problem happens with Java-related apps? I'm not that educated in Java so I don't know what to look for. Anyone?

Ditch the file sharing apps, they're evil. Maybe give a PRAM reset a go although I think the problem may be much more deeply rooted than that. The fact that certain apps aren't even opening is worrying. Have you tried them on different accounts? :)

i removed the file sharing apps a few days ago, and i did a pram reset last week. still nothing. i dont understand how for over a year, all of these things worked without a problem, but just now have they gone from working fine to not working at all. i dont know what i need to do next. i hate this.

normally i dont use one, but i tried turning the one in system preferences on to see what would happen. which was nothing.

Well, I think the PRAM reset would have been better after you deleted the file sharing apps but either way, it looks like a dead end.

So, have you created a new user account (in the System Preferences) to see if the problems carry through? :)
