Hello,

I was wondering if the following was common or recommended practice.

I want to host a business oriented site (self-employed). Right now the business requires no e-commerce solution (e.g. shopping cart), but rather just information and "contacting me" mechanisms"

In the future, I may sell some items, but this is a while down the line.

So, I was thinking of using MobileMe to host my initial, information only site given how quick and easy it would be to set up a site.

Then I could migrate the site to another host when I required more functionality from the site, if ever.

Is this common or recommended?

this would work, you would just have to register your domain with someone like godaddy if you wanted something like "yourbusiness.com" otherwise it will the mobile me domain. there is an option in the mobile me preferences to use a personal domain.

Thanks. Yeah, I already have the domain name registered with GoDaddy. So that is no problem.

I thought I read/heard that you cannot use MobileMe hosting for business activities -- is that true? In my case, it would be very passive. Just information and a contact section. Straddles the line between personal and business I guess.

I would suggest you stay away from iWeb... If that is what you were planning.

Ya, iWeb doesn't leave you with much when/if you want to advance to something a little more complex...

As well I wouldn't trust Mobile Me with any sort of business projects...It's not quite reliable enough for that IMO..

that is true mobileme is not the most reliable host in the world but if you are using it tempoarily it should be fine. I would recomend using dreamhost when you are ready to migrate over to a serious host. If you are planning to use dynamic pages with php or ruby mobileme doesn't support it

While MobileMe would work for what you want to do, I would recommend getting a regular hosting account. There are a number of reasons for this:

  1. MobileMe only supports static pages (no PHP or MySQL).
  2. As far as I am aware, MobileMe will not allow email domain hosting (it is more professional to have an email address @yourbusiness.com rather than @mac.com).
  3. It saves you from having to switch to a new host later when you want a shopping cart etc.
  4. MobileMe is really targeted at personal websites rather than business websites.
As far as hosts go, avoid hosts offering "unlimited" disk space or transfer (or those claiming to offer hundreds of gigs of transfer for a few dollars per month). I haven't used them, but A Small Orange seems to be popular amongst users here. Also check out TJR Networks.
