Hot and loud?

It depends on the particular demand on system resources at any given point in time. Some games and websites are more demanding than others and other apps/widgets/processes running at the time also play a role. It won't get hot enough to cause any damage, though.
That was one of my fears, the machine will get hot and loud by just looking at websites, I know this is the mini forum but can you tell if this will happen with the base iMac too?
You didn't ask if it would get hot and loud by just looking at websites. You specifically mentioned games and Flash websites. You can surf all day long without the fans spinning up, unless you have high demands such as having 30 tabs open on Flash-intensive sites or you're also playing a game. Any Mac will get hot and the fans will spin faster if you put enough demand on the system. That's normal. It's just the Mac doing what it needs to do to keep temps within the normal operating range.
No high demands, just one or two tabs open, unfortunately for kids now all interactive websites are flash based.
I just don't want the room to sound like we are in a wind tunnel.

Have a look at Activity Monitor (Applications / Utilities /) and select All Processes and sort by CPU to see what the culprit may be.

The question is theoretical, as the OP doesn't own the Mac in question yet. They're just trying to get a feel for which Mac model to buy.
Yeah, and what?* I rarely pay attention to any threads while cleaning windows. And today is the day.
Anyway, after much deliberation I came to the conclusion to read some parts of the thread.
I have one iMac from 2007, not the hottest by any means, but in the past two weeks I have put the CPU under a lot of stress again with rendering some fancy animations, and the fans never got above their idle speeds. Room temperature was around 19° C, the Mac's CPU around 60° C or so.
I also watched some Flash content, if there was no other way, and the CPU was at full use, but again, the fans where as silent as ever and the temps were okay too.
* imagine me, totally oblivious of its surroundings, like that cat in my neighbour's window, looking for means to escape, regardless of what music is playing, ah, *****, the windows are still dirty and David Bowie sings about Space and Time
The fans have kicked up more than I expected, but i bet most people I know wouldn't notice them at all. My external drives spinning are louder.

Oh boy! I was ready to hit the but now button in Amazon but now the iMac vs Mac mini debate starts again..
Do you really think, one spot matters? I always leave several spots, thus they don't feel alone.
And cleaning windows like this is almost like cleaning Windows.
