I'm looking into a MBP, and have been reading they tend to run hot. Anyone have any insight on which ones tend to run hotter, the 15" or 17" (assuming the same proc.)? The 17" generally has larger HDD, more VRAM, etc. but it's also got a bigger case and could have better airflow (I'm guessing).

Any facts, opinions or insights on which tends to run hotter (I'm equating cooling with less trouble in the long-run)

The 17" seems to run a bit cooler (based on in-store comparisons), probably for the reasons you give, but it consumes more power, so I suspect they actually are very similar. Since the case is used partially as a heat sink, a hot case doesn't necessarily imply hotter internals. My 15" has been on my lap for well over an hour, doing a Handbrake conversion as I surf, and the hottest temp is 52ºC.
