I'm on temporary duty and I'm going to be in a hotel for a few months. I'm on the hotel's free internet and I noticed I can see other people's macbooks on FINDER under Shared. Just a bit worried, should i buy a firewall?

And whats up with the Finder "shared" why can i see other peoples MacBooks?

The fact that you can see other devices on the same network doesn't mean you can access them or they can access your Mac. Make sure you don't have File Sharing enabled. System Preferences > Sharing

Your Mac has a built-in firewall. Go to System Preferences > Security > Firewall and make sure it is enabled.

Read the What security steps should I take? section of the Mac Virus/Malware FAQ for tips on practicing safe computing.
