I have been testing a m1 pro and a regular m1 next to each other for a couple of days now.
The m1 pro runs idle at almost 50 degrees and the m1 at 30.

I first had the m1 and was super happy with the battery life, it lasted all day. Then I broke the screen of my laptop and had to quickly buy a replacement in the form of the 14 inch. I immediately noticed that the battery life was not as great, I get only 4 hours of doing basic surfing and watching charts, the same as I did on the 13 inch m1. I finally got the screen fixed of the 13 inch and after working with it again amazed by the battery. So now I am running them next to each other, switching back and forth and I noticed the temperature difference, and also the wattage both use. The m1 pro has pretty much almost double wattage for doing the same tasks, so no wonder the battery runs down so fast.

I also did a big stresstest where the m1 pro battery went from 100 percent to 3 in less than an hour, while the m1 was still at 40 percent doing the same stress test.

Any insights? I want apple to have a look a this, but from experience in the the store I have to go to (not a really apple store but premium service centre) they brush of these things. Especially issues with battery they will not take serious.

Which M1 do you have? If it is the M1 MacBook Pro, it will definetly beat the 14” MBP in terms of battery life based on benchmarks I have seen.

The best battery life’s are:
1. 16” MacBook Pro
2. 13” M1 MacBook Pro
3/4. M1 MBA & 14” M1 Pro MBP (it seems the 14” gets around the same battery life as the M1 MBA from what I have seen in some tests)

And in your stress tests, ofcourse the M1 will win as it doesn’t have as much computing power. What you should do is do 1 super heavy task on both machine and see what battery % you have left.

I have the m1 from the MBP. I know the battery life is a bit better than the m1 pro but such a big difference doesn't seems normal I think?

It depends on the number and types of apps you're running. M1 has 4 efficiency cores, while M1 Pro has only 2 efficiency cores, so once 2 efficiency cores are fully used, M1 Pro has to use performance cores that consume more power.

I have the M1 Air and the 14" MBP M1 Pro (base model). The battery life in the Air is noticeable longer doing the same tasks. I'd say about one to two hours longer for the Air.

Both machines still stellar though!

The battery life is insane on these Macs, especially the standby time, which always sucked on Intel Macs. I've never had a M1 Mac have a dead battery after being left unused for a week. I've never picked up a M1 Mac from my bag and the laptop is fans ablaze, hotter than the core of the sun. Both without any exaggeration (ok then, some :)) on every single Intel laptop I've ever had, Mac or otherwise.

Hotter CPU means more power draw which obviously means less time disconnected. As to why, M1 Pro has 2 less efficiency cores.
