What directories & files, on my Iphone should be backed up to restore my unlocked phone if needed?
....... with out itunes

If I copy files to my computer ...... what directories & files?

Or is there is an app thats backs up the files easily?

Iphone 1st gen with 3.0

Thanks
Tony

Backing files with SSH = hack job = fail. Why don't you want to use iTunes. iTunes backups work perfectly fine with my unlocked/jailbroken 3G.

Hi there, I just got one just like yours from America, and before I do anything (as my brother loaded it full of stuff) is I want to back it up in case my first sync goes bad. Can u describe a procedure for me? I think if I plug it into iTunes as is, it may want to erase everything no? thx!!!!

I may be wrong, but I am under the understanding that itunes restore
will restore the original apple/att setup and
then the phone will no longer be un locked?

That is why I want to be able to back up and restore with out itunes.

Thanks again

You asked about backing your your iPhone, not about restoring or upgrading it. :) You can use iTunes to back up your device just fine.

If you want to upgrade and you have an original iPhone, I believe once BootNeuter has been run, you will still be unlocked since firmware upgrades do not flash the baseband. However, the 3G and 3GS models have their basebands flashed when upgrades are performed, hence any unlocks would be wiped out.

Hope that helps!

Bear in mind that iTunes will only back up app store apps, you need to use something like the Cydia package mentioned in this thread to back up your jailbreak apps.

Honestly if he's already set it up on his computer and put stuff on it, you are pretty much out of luck syncing it with your own computer. You will probably need to restore the phone, and rejailbreak it, and make sure to set it up on your computer. However if you plug it into your iTunes and it asks if you want to set it up as a new phone or restore from a backup, you are in luck and can sync it with your computer.

That is correct, though the jailbreak and unlock process usually takes less than ten minutes so it's not a big deal to do it. Upgrade to 3.0.1 and then rejailbreak/unlock it.

So there is not a program or a way,
to backup & restore all the files to un-locked & jailbreak configeration?

I ask because I purchased this phone with ver 3.0, unlocked and ready for my t-mobile simm.
So I have never done the unloclok process.

By the Way:
I tried "appbackup" free on Cydia, but found that my battery was being drained in standby mode for the last 2 days, so I removed it today?
I hope that was the cause of the drain?
anyone have info on that battery issue & "appbackup" app?

I will purchase the Pkgbackup, but not if it is a battery hog, ......

Thanks

I think you actually want AptBackup, not AppBackup. This will backup a list of any jailbroken apps and when you run it after a restore, it will download all your apps again. Both AppBackup and AptBackup should not be running in the background therefore should not be a cause of battery drain.

Got the aptbackup ...thanks

Concerning the battery drain .......
I Have an "ebay app" that was updated 2 days ago.
It appears to have a notification feature that logs on to status.....
even with notification set to "off" .... i deleted it.
problem solved.
