I'm still curious if Apple will make a new large iMac (Pro).

And also, would it be possible to make an iMac Pro with an M2 Ultra inside?

The M1 Ultra only has a TDP of 60W. The Intel Xeon had a TDP of 140W and the Vega 64 had a TDP of 295W. So heat and space wise, this should be a piece of cake, right?

Or maybe Apple will make the larger iMacs also super slim and only go up to an M2 Max?

That would keep the Mac studio probably more interesting.

The previous iMac with 5700XT had a metal score of 59,317. The M2 Max got 86,805. That would be an 46% improvement. But not anywhere near the 150,488 score of the AMD 6800XT, let alone the current 7800XT.

A M2 ultra could potentially have a score of 125,000.

Could they build it? Yes.

Will they build it? I highly doubt it.

With the recent upgrades made to the Mac Mini (M2/M2 Pro), introduction of the Mac Studio, introduction of the Studio Display, lack of updates to the iMac 24" in 2 years points to the Mac Mini/Mac Studio + Display as the new 27" iMac. Just take a look at the comparisons to the intel iMacs on Apple's own site.

This would also be a very niche market as the iMac Pro was before being killed off.

Having said that, I finally bit the bullet and ordered the M2 Pro Mac Mini 10-16 core/16gb/2TB + Studio Display to replace my late 2014 Retina 27" iMac i5. I finally gave up on waiting.

I'm kind of in the same position. I'm thinking I'll wait until March or some time close to that. I'm more interested in the Mac Studio lower end with larger hard drive. I think the RAM and hard drive price options don't warrant the price hike on the Mac Mini. Because the Mac Studio basically comes with more for the same price as the higher end M2 Pro MacMini. I suspect that they'll discontinue the iMac to reduce E-Waste. It's an easier upgrade if you keep the same screen for 10+ years.

The iMac Pro was more of a stopgap as Apple figured out what to do with the Mac Pro. What most professionals and prosumers want isn't an AIO, it's a separate computer and display. Apple knows this.

I'm about to do the same icemantx. Waited and waited, but it's becoming more evident they're moving away from AIO computers. Will wait until March on the off chance they announce an upgraded Mac Studio. If not, I'm going to pull the trigger as well. My current iMac is hanging by a few fine strings until it dies.

I still think that 6K Retina-grade LCD panel Dell is using for that 32" monitor they just announced at CES would be... perfect... in a 32" iMac Pro. I'm convinced it will turn up in an Apple product of some sort, though it could also be a standalone monitor...
