Only 0.24 GB are taken by photo's, yet my photostream has over 400 pictures in it taken with the 4s(I'd say at least a gig of space).

Other photo albums account for the 0.24 GB.

How the heck is this working?

Photo Stream is part of iCloud, meaning, as I understand it, the photos in Photo Stream are stored "in the cloud", as opposed to on your phone.

That doesn't make sense, they're in my phone because I can see them.

Perhaps I'm not being clear, what I'm asking is how aren't they taking up storage space on my phone?
Because they are in there, I am viewing them on the phone.

They aren't taking up storage space on your phone because they're not stored on your phone.

Think of them like images on the internet: you can view them on your phone but they're not stored on your phone.

Or better yet, think of the internet itself: you have access to incalculable amounts of data via the internet yet none of it is stored on your phone.

In the case of Photo Stream, when turned on, the photos you take are automatically uploaded to your iCloud account (i.e. your little slice of the internet) and are viewable on your phone via the Photo Stream "folder" in your Photos app. The photo, of course, is also stored on your phone initially but you can delete it to free up space while it will remain in your Photo Stream.

Then how is it that I can see them while in Airplane mode?

This stuff ain't magic. They are really in the phone.

To answer the OP, I don't know, but if I had to guess I'd bet that Photo Stream is being counted under 'other.' The point of the bar in iTunes is to guide your choices. Since you can't choose what photos are in Photo Stream I suspect they don't count them as photos, and only count the photo you have chosen to sync through iTunes.

But that's just my guess.

In my mind, as I don't see it too well documented elsewhere:

Photos are taken and placed in the Camera Roll.
Within WiFi (and Photostream on) they are sent out to iCloud and devices/computers.
Then these photos (like photos placed into folders) are placed into a "Photostream" folder.
They are not copied but merely retargeted within that folder.

Now, if you delete the originals, say all photos on your phone, I'd wonder if that number would be 0.0 GB or remain the .24GB to reflect the fact that these are still on your phone and if need be, they'd be "seen via internet-only connection" if you were to continue to shoot and fill the space on your phone or with video/apps.

Though that makes me wonder about Photos I place into Photostream on the iMac…are they sent in FULL RES to my phone?

Good point, I didn't know you could still view them while in Airplane mode. Cache, maybe? I don't know.

If they are indeed on your phone locally, then I'd have to agree with you that they must be classified as "Other" in the OP's image since 400 iPhone 4S photos would surely take up more than 0.24 GB.

That's a possibility, but I'm quite annoyed apple doesnt document exactly how things are stored.

Just annoying.
'It just works', yet I need to know how to manage it thank you.

The discrepancy has always been there due to the space the OS is taking..

I think it's probably just under others.
