How do they fair in the noisy environment? I know they don't really block out sound but I'd appreciate hearing from anybody who has tried them out on a plane. Thanks!

Not great, and definitely not worth the risk of hearing damage from the maxing out of volume you'd need to comfortably listen. For the plane, noise isolating or canceling buds are recommended. BeatsX, for example, or the new Sennheiser HD1 in ears.

I imagine the AirPods with no noise isolation, would not be very suitable for an airplane. Especially higher elevations when your ears tend to pop.

I thought using Bluetooth on a plane was restricted?

They are sufficient, but as others have mentioned not ideal. The size trumps everything else for me. Good enough for whatever entertainment I choose, and no bulky headset or cord to worry about.

I just used them on a flight a couple weeks ago. They're sufficient to say the least, but I was still able to hear the person next to me. If you crank up the volume you can tune out those around you, but not completely.

I probably will be invest in Bose noise cancelling headphones for our long flight to Hawaii next month. I'll leave the AirPods for everyday use.

Only cellular radio's are restricted. bluetooth/wifi are fine. Certainly in europe too.

Ah I see, I recently looked it up for my coming interatlantic flight, there they stated (KLM/Delta) that is was restricted. It's good News though! Eventhough I don't have any Bluetooth equipment haha

I was on a British Air flight maybe 4 years ago and was specifically told I could not use Bluetooth headphones. Did a policy against Bluetooth usage exist at some point?

Quite possibly, I believe it was only a year or two ago they actually let you keep your devices on during takeoff and landing, I would assume when it came out and was developing they banned it.

I experimented with mine a couple of weeks ago on a flight. As others mentioned, they are useable to some extent, but I didn't like turning up the volume so far to overcome the engine noise. If you are normally using the wired earbuds and are happy with them, you probably could also use the AirPods.

I don't like active noise-cancelling headphones either because of the noise-cancelling noise pressure (you can feel it when no music is playing). I prefer the in-ear noise isolation ear buds which can be easily adjusted to block out the noise so your music can be played at normal volume .... or just have quiet with no music :) .

I do wish there was a provision to press a button on my iPhone while playing music which would simply pause the music and enable the microphone to pick up voices or announements and send them thru the headphones so that I don't have to remove them to hear what is being said.

I had no issues on a plane. I really does depend on how the fit in your ear. Some will close off more outside noise than others.

the only downside to an airpod i suppose. not the greatest device to use on the plane

I've just used them on a plane this week & can say they handled it well.

This was on a Qantas A380 though, which are meant to be a quiet aircraft, despite their size. Also, I was seated mid-craft, with the engines to my sides (although I was seated in the middle isle section).

Wasn't using them at 100% as it would've been too loud.
