I just got a refurb 27" Late 2009 from the apple store. Does anyone have experience with them and the yellowing issues? Are they worse because they are refurbs? Are they better because they are refurbs?

It is shipping from Sacramento, CA - I know there are discussions from sources like gizmodo saying that shipping is the cause of the yellowing and that items from China and BTO from China are the ones that are getting hit with the worst yellow. Anyone have any thoughts on that matter?

Even though from the threads here it feels like I have an 90% chance I will get some yellow - I am hopeful. We will see come monday! Just thought I would start a refurb thread, since it is hard to separate the data.

If you want an iMac then you are going to have to risk it. Even if a refurb does suffer from a yellow screen, it is still covered by the full Applecare warranty.

It may be a pain taking it back, but you will get a replacement.

Most are good. Some are still bad. No need to make this thread really.

Really? Can you direct me to information on refurbs? I have been reading through the super long yellow tint poll one, the recent one on yellow tints and then degree of the problem, and then the new imac 27" owners thread.

I am not being sarcastic...really looking for general information and discussion on just refurbs. Since there is no reason to make this thread, where can I go to read up on it?

If you believe there is a 90% chance of getting a yellow screen then your odds of getting one (or finding something wrong with your iMac) will probably be about oh....90%.

If you've already decided there will be a problem then you'll find something.

I feel bad for the apple reps that will have to deal with you.....

Lots of us have had yellow tint problems (most of those are legitimate). Then again, lots probably have perfect screens. No need to go into what sounds like an insult.

I love how you just summed up what you think of me in 2 posts..well more like 2 sentences.. Nice to meet you too.

Like I said in other threads, my apple gear has been pretty much spot on. If i don't see an imperfection, I won't go looking for one.

Anyways, just a simple question. If you don't have experience with refurbs or know of refurb information, thanks for your 2 cents but don't really need it.

It is simple! Buy a Mac (Refurb or New it doesn't matter), if you are not satisfied bring it back. The End

Search the forums there are dozens and dozens of threads that discuss all this.

Unless your computer says assembled in USA on the label , it was made in china.

Link to the article that says the Chinese systems have more yellow issues? Don't spread misinformation.

I have been through 3 cto 2009s and 2 cto 2010s. All had serious issues and all were made in the USA.

The 3 MacBook pros we have were all made in china and are perfect.

You will probably get a Chinese system, sounds like you ordered a stock system. Cto ones ship from union city ca. There is a stockpile of new iMacs in sacremento that were all made in china and stored there for easier distribution.

I read about it in the mega thread..and a little in this thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/860501/

As you can see I have been doing a lot of reading. Hence for people telling me to do a search...obviously I have. But I am looking JUST at refurbs, whereas these threads are all over the place - late 2009, late 2010, replacements, exchanges, 21.5", 24" etc. That is simply too much information in areas that I am not looking into right now. And out of every 20 posts I read about regarding a 27", I read about 1 refurb. Barely any data that I can find anyway.

Thanks for that info on the stock pike etc. If this doesn't work out on the first try I might just do a macbook pro to a nice hd lcd. People are so ready to be judgmental on this forum...even to 1,000+ post members.

I'm with you on this. I'm ordering a refurb 27" next week and am hoping I won't have to play the replacement game. You'd think it being refurbished would help but who knows.

That was my thinking...but I haven't come across anything in my readings that would suggest well...anything! Wish there were more refurb owners out there voicing their experiences. Oh well.. guess I will be the first in a few days!

I got a refurb i7 last week, there was some yellow but I mainly returned it because there was a little speck/blemish on the LCD under the glass. Returned the iMac and 2 days later got another one and this one is pretty good. If you really try to notice you can see a little yellow but its really not that big of a deal. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Thanks for the info.

If one is looking for a refurbished iMac and wants to eliminate the possibility of receiving one with a yellow-tinted display, you could always get one of these:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB420LL/A?cid=AOS-US-AFF-FEED

As attractive as the 27" model seems, it also seems that "getting a good one" has become pretty much of a crapshoot due to inherent design defects in the 27" LED display panel (as noted in the link posted above, the design seems susceptible to damage during shipping).

You won't have these problems if you buy "a generation back" and get a refurb 24".

And the price is right, too -- almost 40% off the original Apple Store price!

Thanks Fishrrman, I was surprised the 24"s are still in the refurb store. I would pick it up, but I would be bothered by the "squareness" of the machine compared to the 27"

My imac is arriving today. Incidentally, I went into a couple stores to just look at the 27" iMacs and this famous - yellow tint. Now, I did not do tests but I went in to simply see if my eyes can see the problem really quickly. 10 minutes at the computers, changing the background to white and various colors, looking on forums, and I haven't really found an imac that bothered me. I am looking forward to actually doing tests and what not when I get home. If the screen doesn't bother me...I am keeping it.
