I have an Intel based MacBook Pro, sometimes it works just fine but sometimes the animation becomes laggy even with build-in discrete graphic card. There's no doubt that M1 is powerful in CPU perspective, but nobody seems to mention the overall smoothness of M1 Mac, and how about the system animations, eg., switch spaces, open folders in launchpad, call in notifications?

It's a matter of vram and vram bandwidth. My iMac late 2009 original had radeon 4850 with 512MB vram, which was upgraded to a 5750 and later 6970 both with 1GB. Even though gpu performance between 4850 and 5750 is about the same, the extra 512MB of vram made tremendous difference in animation fluidity of mission control. M1 uses shared memory, but at relative high bandwith and I haven't noticed lag at any point. But I am only using the buit-in display and sometimes in combonation with this old late iMac in target display mode (2560x1440).
